Could anyone tell me please when old St James Church, Hugglescote, was demolished and where I might find the burial record for Cordelia Slack who was buried in the churchyard there sometime after 1871, the last census record I can find for her (in Derbyshire). My great uncle, born 1874 remembered her, as a small boy, when she was living with his grandpa Newberry Dean in Hugglescote, but I cannot find her in the 1881 census. Many thanks for any help!

Although I live in donington le heath, i don't know dates for St James but this should give you a rough idea. (St John's is the church that replaced St James!) have you tried Leicestershire records office?

This church is St John the Baptist, which replaced St James. The old church was about 1/4 mile to the left. All that's left is the graveyard, behind Dennis St. The street used to be the only one through the village and consequently was called Main St. One of the old houses has (I think) a date on it from the 1500s - some of the houses are from the 1700s. Feel free to contact me if you would like further info - I might not know but I probably know a man who does!

My great grandmother was Elizabeth Dean who married William Wilkins. They ran the Gate Inn Hugglescote. Elizabeth married Daniel Newbold after William died aged 35. Anyone know of this family? I was interested to find the name Dean came up. Wilkins family ran this pub for many years during the 1800's until the 1900's. Elizabeth Wilkins (Dean) was about 44 in 1901.
