Butler family in Hampshire
« on: Wednesday 12 July 06 09:09 BST (UK) »

I have Richard Butler who first appears in Selborne in 1750 when he married Sarah Sparrowfield in 1750.
He seems to have had some money as he, at a Court Leet and Court Baron on May 2 1751, in Selborne Manor,  became copyholder of land including a shop at Selborne.
His wife Sarah was christened in the parish of Alton Hants.
Does anyone have any information about Richard?

Hi Allen,

Welcome to RootsChat.

Do you have any other details of his life?

There is a will of Richard Butler, labourer of Selborne, at HRO dated 1809, reference 1809A/020

There is a bundle of papers listed in the HRO catalogue:

Quote
Bundle of papers re Butler Family's right to copyhold land in manor of Selborne, date 1751-1846
Includes copies of court roll, receipts and agreements, copy will of Richard Butler, (dated 6 Apr 1809, proved 19 Oct 1809) and abstract of Edmund Butler's title to a messuage and tenements with garden in the manor of Selborne, dated 1846 (most documents on abstract are in this bundle).
Reference is 107M94/23

Richard was buried 23 Aug 1809 in Selborne.  No age given.  Sad

His wife Sarah seems to have been buried 4 Feb 1793 in Selborne, age 68.

Hi Nell
Thank you for your reply and your welcome.
Richard is a mystery - there are no other Butlers in Selborne at this time as far as I can tell so to me this means that he was an incomer but from where?
Sarah was christened in Alton parish and her father was buried there so it is likley that he met her in the Alton area.
Jan 13 1768 Elizabeth Butler, widow late of Alton aged 78 was buried in Selborne, was this Richards mother living with him once she had been widowed.
I assume that he came from Alton or area, but no trace in the parish records.
Richard contributed to the repair of the local church so I assume that he a member of the church.
He could at least write his name albeit shakily.

I have seen all the archived documents that you mention but all relate to post arrival in Selborn, I have found nothing before that time.

The family spread out into Hampshire and Sussex, london, many were farmers, one ancestor, Benjamin Butler, farmed Chase farm near Bramshott/Liphook and also leased the 7 Thorns Inn renamed the Spaniard or something like that.

D*** & blast,  no clues from the will then?  That's a shame.  Although I would expect Richard to be a similar age to his wife or at most a couple of years older.  Are there any possible candidates?

Nell
Not a darned thing in Hampshire - zilch - zero - nill - however, I tested my DNA about 4 years ago and got a match last year with another butler family which can be traced back to Hampstead in the early 1800's, but then another brick wall - great!
All is not lost though, I/we have sufficiently rare DNA as to make most/all hits with the same surname a relative! Is that convenient or what? We just have to hope they get tested before we die! So all you people out there get your DNA tested, (free on the Sorensen site).
There is one glint of light in the murky world of family history and that is by applying the chaos theory times the squares on the hippopotamus the Hampstead Butlers may have originated from Chaddleworth, Berkshire.
So I will be very interested to correspond with any Butlers from that area and if they want to get their DNA tested then so much the better!
