Help please
I have got as far as uploading the phpgedview files and getting the configuration page up BUT it won't let me finish the configuration. I must have done something wrong but can't see how to fix. The message I get is

Unable to create Index files. Make sure Write permissions are set on the PhpGedView directory. Permissions may be restored once Index files are written.
I'm sure there must be something quite simple that I am missing. Have to stop for now though before my husband becomes malnourished!!

Hi Falcybe,
I don't know how to stop people downloading your gedcom, but it was never a good idea to have details of living people on a website - any website !
I suggest you create a new GEDCOM, without any living people and use that for the website.

Got a bit of a problem - I already successfully uploaded phpgedview to a Lycos website a few months ago & got it working perfectly, but didn't like the banner ads etc., realised most of my site was re my family tree anyway, so thought the rootschat route would be ideal.
BUT... I've uploaded the files in various ways, but get no further than the first automatic configuration page. It never gives me the option of using Index Files (I tried uploading both with and without the SQL database activated), and then goes straight to the login page, without giving me the option of allocating Admin rights, so I can't login!
I work in IT, with over 10 years PC & Internet experience, know a fair bit of HTML but not PHP, and I'm not a programmer, so no doubt I'm doing something dumb. :-)
Any help or advice appreciated, thanks in advance,

Thanks for the suggestion, Gadget - but I had a look at all the existing postings dealing with phpgedview before posting, and there was nothing that matched my problem.
My problem is specific to the very beginning of the configuration part of the install - according to the instructions you should be able to choose either a SQL database or Index Files to store the GEDCOM data, then once you save the config, you go straight on to allocate the Administration User.
When I installed phpgedview on my Lycos Tripod site I used Index files as I have little knowledge of programming and only a bit about databases – and I had the site up and running within an hour without any problems.
On the first Rootschat install I decided to use the SQL route, but after activating the Rootschat SQL database, uploading the phpgedview folders and files, and setting the folder/file rights on the site, I then had no way of choosing Index Files in the automatic config setup page. And after saving the config it missed the Admin User setup & went straight to the login page, and of course there are no users set up TO login, so I have no access to the site to modify the config!
I tried wiping everything, and uploaded a copy of my Tripod site with no success – i.e. it kind of works but there are too many php errors to rectify.
I tried wiping again, deleting/deactivating the Rootschat SQL database, and uploading phpgedview, with the same results i.e. the install phase misses out the Administration User setup.
Hope someone can help!

Thanks Bob - I posted in case there was a quick and obvious fix to save me lots of further work, but now I know it's not just me I'll do little further digging & wil post the fix if I find it before you. :-)

ps
our admin. changed some server settings a few months ago, to make it more secure.
It may have something to do with that (access rights, etc)

Hi Bob, I suspected that this wasn't the problem (I think it would have produced access error messages like I got when I tried uploaded my existing site to RootsChat), so I started investigating.
I found a nice little site that may be worth posting to save you & Trystan getting a lot of RootsChat PHPGedView queries – links at bottom of post.
It turns out that the present release 4.0.1 only came out the day I tried to set up my Rootschat site! R4.0.1 has removed the Index Files option, which answered my first query, and I suspect that my second problem may be caused by the new release…
Yep; release 3.3.8 uploaded & installed without any problem! RTFM!!!! R 4.0.1 looks pretty good – one thing that may interest RootsChat members is linking individuals between different DBs & websites – but I suspect there are a few bugs that still need to be fixed.
