Re: phpGEDview install problems
« Reply #90 on: Sunday 23 July 06 17:39 BST (UK) »

Hi, I'm trying to upgrade from phpgedview 3 to 4 and am uploading the folders and files to the site in a different path (/public/phpview/) so I don't lose the old (/phpview/) before the new is working.

I have managed to upload 8 out of 17 sub-folders but after that every new file drops off straight away. The manager says I still have 29.78 mb available space?! Is there a daily upload limit or is there a problem on the site?

Another oddity I have noticed is that in the tutorial, Help with building your website, n° 8 txt files are not in the allowed list. Well, apart from the current problem, all the text files I have uploaded have stayed on the site.

A second little question, if I may. I notice that quite a few family trees are showing living people or have gedcoms with living people on which gedcoms can be downloaded.  I am not the only person who thought that phpgedview kept the living private by simply marking them private. (my tree is ex-living now which is a shame because some of the reports are wonderful)

Reading all the readme's and installation guides it seems as though the way round stopping people downloading original gedcoms (ie not through the phpgedview programme) is to upload the geds to the same level as our domain name. What I want to know is, is this allowable on rootschat. Contact with other people using other sites suggests this is a very common solution to privacy problems.

For the 1st part, there is a problem with the site or manager. I deleted some old files and was able to add new ones. So either the manager cannot count or the site thinks I've reached my limit before getting half way. Any comments appreciated

Hi falcybe,

I'm sure one of the moderators will give a definitive answer, but could the answer be the difference between the server space the files are using and the total size of the files?

Excuse me if you already know or have discounted this, but files can take up more disk space than their actual size, depending on how the server hard drive has been formatted.

Without going into the technical details (I'd have to Google it to explain it!), if you right-click on a folder in Windows Explorer and choose 'properties', you'll see that there are 2 sizes -  "Size", and "Size on disk", and the size on disk is larger than the actual size.

Hope this help,

Graeme

Thanks Graeme,
Yours is a very valid point which I hadn't even thought of here. However, even if I add 1/5th size, I'm still using under 20mb of the 50mb available. Perhaps some files take up 3 or 4 x their apparent size?!
Anyway, I got all my files up in the end, today and tomorrow I shall have to go in and configure everything and change links and so on.
Thanks, falcybe

Hi,

sounds like it wasn't the cause, but as it's now 'fixed' I guess we may never know!

Oh, and re yr other comment, I thought the phpgedview default is for living to be viewed by administrator rights only, but when I uploaded to rootschat I found my dummy user could view living family members & I had to change the config.

And re the ged files download problem, phpgedview advise not to place phpgedview files in the root, but to create a new folder & then restrict the access. I guess you mean that if people guess the folder/file name they can copy it down... or am I missing the point???!!! :-)

Are you sure you wanted to ask, Graeme?:

If you click on here : http://arthurfhayden.rootschat.net/phpview/index.php you will see my (current) tree made with phpgedview 3.3.8, with two trees up. There won’t be much info in the address bar at this point.
Next select one of the two trees, Hayden or Lacey
Now look in the address bar and you will see: http://arthurfhayden.rootschat.net/phpview/index.php?command=gedcom&ged=arthurfh.ged
or if you chose lacey you will see: http://arthurfhayden.rootschat.net/phpview/index.php?command=gedcom&ged=lacey.ged
This tells you the name of my gedcoms and where they are to be found, in phpview/index.
(if you have only one tree then the name of the gedcom is not available doing this and you have to guess it. I bet clever hackers find it very quickly, hmm)
If you now change the URL to say, http://arthurfhayden.rootschat.net/phpview/index/lacey.ged and press go, you will have a dialog box popping up asking you if you want to open or save lacey.ged or arthurfh.ged
Don’t worry, I have hidden all my living on the basic geds.

This means that anyone who has put up a tree with the config. to hide the living is scuppered because anyone can download the full gedcom with the living listed. (you wrote Oh, and re yr other comment, I thought the phpgedview default is for living to be viewed by administrator rights only, but when I uploaded to rootschat I found my dummy user could view living family members & I had to change the config.)

Now, reading slowly through the readme’s and installation guides and following what my sister’s brother in law told me I think we have to do the following: Twas he who highlighted the problem for me.

Level 0   The server for rootschat = the harddisk = rootschat’s root
Level 1   http://arthurfhayden.rootschat.net = see above = my root, holding the phpview folder.
level 2   myroot/phpview = phpgedview is here
level 3   level 2/index = the gedcoms are here

The installation guide, 2.5 Security and good manners, says we should place the gedcoms at the same level as my level 1 which is the level holding the PhpGedView. In other words we need to access the area accessed when we applied for our web space! Little hiccup at this point, looking at my URL for the tree we notice straight away that I don’t have an URL for my URL. I don’t know where it is on the server’s computer so how do we put the index there???
If I have made a pig’s ear of section 2.5 then please correct but I do know my sister’s bro-in-law had to follow similar procedures for his tree on his private site hosted elsewhere.
My sister’s bro-in-law says to run Telnet with WinXP and move /phpview/index up two levels. the command would be: (from windows) Start/run/cmd/enter. In the new window type telnet arthurfhayden.rootschat.net (if that is my ftp server name which it seems to be from my records), then again arthurfhayden.rootschat.net which is my user name and then xxxx which is of course my password (as it appears on the screen lol  Grin). Last but not least, move /phpview/index ../index/, the two dots meaning up two levels.
Problems arising from this.
1 would that be allowable on the site?
2 sometimes the index (other folders moved with this method) disappears (up its own orifice?  Lips Sealed) so best to make a copy.
I have not tried this yet as I wasn’t clear when I first asked about n° 1 problem at the beginning of June, so didn’t receive an answer and now I am upgrading to version 4 so would do everything with that.

Hopefully crystal clear now,
falcybe

Hello Berlin-Bob and Graeme and everyone else with an interest in this subject,

In an earlier post I said I uploaded V.4 alongside V.3. Complete failure! So I deleted everything, both versions, leaving me with nothing at all.
Then I ftp'd V.4 back up to rootschat, using the original folder structure. (http://arthurfhayden.rootschat.net/phpview/V.4)
Then after I chodded 777 practically everything (see below), I "addressed" my IE browser to http://arthurfhayden.rootschat.net/phpview/upgrade33-40.php and it worked, after a fashion. I had 2 trees left when I upgraded; hayden and lacey. I have had to re-import several times to get rid of many errors and I'm still tweaking. Then I had several goes at creating a new tree: falconer. I managed at one stage to knock out a perfectly good ged with an empty string!!!!. Anyway, I re-uploaded the gedcom and now it works best of all.

So, it seems that to get V.4 working on rootschat it is necessary to have V.3.xxx working and then overwrite it with V.4. I would like to point out here that I have always used MySql because I like databases.

I kid you not about chodding everything that moves! In version 3 all I had to permit were the index folder and config.php. In version 4 I'm getting "can't open/read" messages all over the shop, and so I 777 each file in turn until I get the message "OK" or words to that effect. Oh lovely computers! lol.

I shall now start looking at "remote linking"

Cheers,

Hi Falcybe,

many thanks for keeping us all updated. ... and many thanks for persevering  Grin

I've kept quiet as I have no experience at all with Version 4,
so it's great to see that you are getting it to work, at last.  Smiley Smiley

Hi Falcyb,

I did read and was interested in your post, didn't reply as I didn't really have anything to add & didn't want to clog up the forum!

As I mentioned in a previous post, version 4 is a recent release, and it would seem that upgrading is not for the faint-hearted. :-)

Amd I would add that for anyone for whom keeping living relatives' details secret is important, it might be best to remove living members from their gedcoms before uploading. At least until the position on phpgedview/server confidentiality is clarified!

Hi Graeme and Bob,

Thanks for your replies, it's nice to know I'm not alone. A little question, do you know how to protect a web folder from unauthorized access? I'm thinking along the lines of having two trees up. One with the living shown as "living" destined to the gen.public and the other with eveything clear for my sister and me.  With rootschat restricting file size to 1mb I'm going to have to put my full ged up on another web site and direct phpgedview in that direction. In the meantime I'm trying to create several geds which would seam together with remote linking.

If nothing else, the 1mb restriction is adding a bit of interest to the admin side of things.

Finally, I saw a posting yesterday from someone who claimed to have put V.4. up with no probs. Shall I find the posting again so you can grill him as to how?

Nice and sunny here at 7pm south of Brussels but not too hot. Enjoy the rest of your weekend,

Can anyone help, I have just uploaded phpGEDview 4.0.1 to my site, I set the permissions to 777 on config.php and index folder then went to the site (Config page), after entering a database username and password I clicked on save configuration. then I got the following message:

Your current database configuration is bad. Please check your database connection parameters and configure again.
DB Error: connect failed [nativecode=Access denied for user: 'gordon@localhost' (Using password: YES)] ** Array

I can not get any further, Please can someone help.

Regards,

Gordon.

Hello Gordon,

It all seems to be a bit hit and miss (not enough hand-holding for beginners so we have to learn as we go along which isn't a bad thing) so when I first succeeded in getting everything working (with mysql) in version 3 I wrote myself a crib sheet should I ever need to start again from the beginning or should my sister ever want to know.
I have just made this into a pdf so can join it to this post. I have replaced personal info like logons and passwords with xxxxxxx. As you have got as far as you said you did in your post, reading my crib sheet should make a lot of sense to you. It will either tell you that you have done everything right and you have a problem I cannot help with or it will give you a pointer or 2 in the right direction. Being a crib sheet, I have made notes all over the place to remind me of pitfalls at various stages, eg: NB: underlines, not dots where a name looks similar (arthurfhayden(dot)rootschat(dot)net or arthurfhayden (underline)rootschat(underline)net for the database) this is very important.
Anyway, read all the other posts from Berlin Bob and Graeme "Cadoret" especially his links and others posts too. The answer is in these posts somewhere.

If all else fails, find version 3, create everything with that and then overwrite the phpGedView with version 4. The Database will not be affected/amended/harmed by the update. A bit of a bind but not too much work.

If anyone can improve on my pdf crib sheet then please do. Perhaps attach links to all the guides?

Good luck,
falcybe

At the moment I have my trees as PDF's on my site but thought I would try to use PHPGedView - beginning to think that's a mistake.

Having read all the threads about it, I am confused. It may be the brain being dead or the lateness of the hour but please can someone answer a simple (I hope) question - probably the first of many Cheesy.

I use NetObjects Fusion 8 for my website and this has it's own FTP. When I download PHP, do I download it into the same place as my website - eg. c/Prog File/NO/NOF8/User Sites/ my website (then have Assets, Backups, Local Publish, Preview, Recovery, Style Preview, Styles folders and my website as a NOF file)

Cheers

Hi dinie,

I like the PhpGedView so persevere!
If you are having problems with your built-in FTP programme then go here for a simple one I like for half a dozen sites I upload to:
http://www.coreftp.com/
using with rootschat: (you'll see when you have the programme open)
site name: RootsNet (or whatever identifying name talks to you)
host: yourname.rootschat.net
user: yourname.rootschat.net
password: xxxxxx (your rootsnet password that goes with your username)
port 21, timeout 60, retries 2 (this works for me)

right-clicking any file or folder (directory) you have uploaded to the site gives you a short-cut menu and you can add to the "custom commands" choice the chmod 777 and chmod 755 commands, controlling read/write permissions. (see my crib sheet at the bottom of my previous posting, eg.)

whenever I download something to my computer I put it in a sub folder of C:/mydownloads, which I created for the purpose. Then I always know where everything I've downloaded is.
It doesn't really matter where you put it if what you do works for you.
Once the files are on the rootschat site you won't look at the ones on your computer again unless something goes wrong.
I unzip the php files into a folder of the same name as the zip (phpGedView-4.0-all) and then uploading is a piece of cake as the folder structure stays the same. The only thing you have to decide on is the 1st folder you are going to use in the web-site itself. Instead of putting my stuff straight into the site I made a 1st directory called phpview and uploaded everything there. see http://arthurfhayden.rootschat.net/phpview/index.php
Then again, how do you like organizing your work?

All the best,
falcybe

Hi Falcybe

Thanks for your reply. I have had a look at my Net Object Fusion8 programme and there is a PHP connections option. See screenshot, will this be what I need to upload Gedview?
I have got to this screen but am not sure what info I need to put into each box.

The options are:

Type: Custom String
Host: localhost
Engine: MySQL
Database: blank
User: (Guess this is my Rootschat user name)
Password: (Guess this is my Rootschat password)

or

Type: DSN
Engine: MSAccess
DSN: blank (browse button takes me to another window to locate the data source - file data source or machine data source)
User: (as above)
Password: (as above)

As you may have guessed i'm not technically minded re this so the simplest answers please Cheesy Cheesy

Cheers

Dinie
