Hi Dinie,
I'm an experienced amateur so you may get better advice elsewhere but.... From what I've already seen (my site is up and I'm just beginning studying PHP), your screen shot seems to be trying to do much too much for what rootschat needs.
Simple you said, good because I get lost with complicated too, so... 1) Rootschat gives us the MySQL database which we access through PHP. And, most importantly, if you follow the instructions given in Rootschat you will get your connection to MySQL. 2) Your screen shot with its MySQL engine is for a web site that seems to leave everything up to you so it is no good at all for us (unless you are an expert who knows exactly what goes where). Perhaps I've misunderstood? 3) If your Net fusion inbuilt ftp does not do simple, download the programme I mentioned and use it as I said. Net fusion is an all singing all dancing programme of the sort I found much too much before I had learned the ropes. It gives you everything bar the understanding. Even now I prefer as much manual as possible. I like to feel in charge of what I'm doing. 4) In fact, if you copy my style exactly as written then you will achieve the download to your site (ftp not needed for that part) and the upload to the rootschat site. Then if you don't quite like my method of working at least you will understand what is going on and you'll be able to invent your own style of working. I assume you have downloaded (& printed?) my pdf for I see the count has gone up to 28. 5) Anyway, get the PHP files on site and then ask more questions if need be. Print out the other helps too. http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net/ + those in Graeme's posting and others you see. All very useful
Cheers, falcybe
ps: your guesses for "user" and "password" are spot on. It's just the programme which is over the top

There seem to be a few folk having setup problems here, so it might be worthwhile setting out a few helpful "rules" for folk.
The first one is to remind everyone that there is a help forum at http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=185166 Here you will find the people who are the authors of PGV, and who know most of the problems you can experience.
The next is to get your own set-up correct. 1. Having downloaded PGV, unzip it and take out all the stuff you don't need...unwanted themes, foreign flags and so on. The resulting upload will be less than 8Mb if you do. 2. Use an FTP client for uploads. FileZilla is good (and free) or Fetch for the Mac. 3. Read the Wiki mentioned in the post above 4. Use FTP to upload your GEDCOM to the "index" folder
If you are using FileZlla, you can set permissions here as well - right click on any file name or folder, select File Attributes, then set "index" to 777, and your GEDCOM file in the index folder to 777. Do the same for the "media" folder - and (if you plan to use maps) the "modules" folder as well.
Also find the file "config.php" and set it to 777.
Now, the confusion over what to name things! We are all used to the conventional xxxxxx.rootschat.com, but for PGV, we have some changes.
Reading down the configuration page, you will have MySQL as the Database Type, and localhost as the host.
Your user name will be xxxxxx_rootschat_net, and this will also be the database name, 2 boxes down. Note the underbar in place of the dot!!
AFAIK, that takes care of probably 85% of the setup problems.
Get in touch if anything I've said is unclear. Next post, I'll show you which files you can safely delete before upload!

Before you upload anything, these files can be deleted:
In images/flags - anything you don't want. For the English among us, en-gb.gif is probably all you need
In languages - if you want only English language stuff, delete everything that doesn't have a name like xxxxx.en.php. The CHANGELOG stuff isn't needed, so for one language, only 5 files should remain
In places, erase all folders except "eng" - but make sure you *keep* the individual files, not in folders, that have .js and so on after their name. In my setup here, there are 7 of them.
In themes, keep at least "minimal" and "standard". You can delete the rest if you like, and add them back at any time.

Thanks Paul,
I've recently bought a book to learn PHP, MySQL and Apache but I have a long, long way to go. Just setting up the trees was an experience in itself. I started with PhpGedView 3 and then put up 4 after my site had to be wiped. Then discovered that 4 would not go up so went back to 3 and updated! More fickle than a *****, I hope none are following this thread or I'm in deep trouble, lol.
I like your attempt to put some order into PhpGedView but I get the idea that you will have to put up an entire website/MySQL forum on the subject to get something coherent. If you dive deep into Rootschat you'll find notes all over the shop. On the one hand I wish everything were clearer on the other hand I know I'm learning more by having to find things out the hard way so....
Anyway, I think the big project for this or any site is to make sense of the trees and the wealth of genealogical info on it. We are all diving around trying to put up our trees and help each other but so far I have had only one person contact me re the info on my tree. She was a cousin and so it was a useful contact. From that, I wish I had more time to troll through others' trees and maybe make more contacts with others. My sister, who is doing most of the research has physically met cousins from around Britain, Australia & America and has been in contact with others from Africa and has lines to follow up in continental Europe. All very exciting when it takes off.
And your tree, Paul, I can't find a link to it. Not up yet or on another site somewhere?
All the best, falcybe
