Hi Dinie,

I'm an experienced amateur so you may get better advice elsewhere but....
From what I've already seen (my site is up and I'm just beginning studying PHP), your screen shot seems to be trying to do much too much for what rootschat needs.

Simple you said, good because I get lost with complicated too, so...
1) Rootschat gives us the MySQL database which we access through PHP. And, most importantly, if you follow the instructions given in Rootschat you will get your connection to MySQL.
2) Your screen shot with its MySQL engine is for a web site that seems to leave everything up to you so it is no good at all for us (unless you are an expert who knows exactly what goes where). Perhaps I've misunderstood?
3) If your Net fusion inbuilt ftp does not do simple, download the programme I mentioned and use it as I said. Net fusion is an all singing all dancing programme of the sort I found much too much before I had learned the ropes. It gives you everything bar the understanding. Even now I prefer as much manual as possible. I like to feel in charge of what I'm doing.
4) In fact, if you copy my style exactly as written then you will achieve the download to your site (ftp not needed for that part) and the upload to the rootschat site. Then if you don't quite like my method of working at least you will understand what is going on and you'll be able to invent your own style of working. I assume you have downloaded (& printed?) my pdf for I see the count has gone up to 28.
5) Anyway, get the PHP files on site and then ask more questions if need be. Print out the other helps too. http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net/ + those in Graeme's posting and others you see. All very useful

Cheers, falcybe

ps: your guesses for "user" and "password" are spot on. It's just the programme which is over the top

I like NOF as it is a wysiwyg type of thing. I just chuck the information at it and it all comes out OK (usually) Grin Grin Grin so getting into the technical stuff is scary.

There seem to be a few folk having setup problems here, so it might be worthwhile setting out a few helpful "rules" for folk.

The first one is to remind everyone that there is a help forum at http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=185166 Here you will find the people who are the authors of PGV, and who know most of the problems you can experience.

The next is to get your own set-up correct.
1. Having downloaded PGV, unzip it and take out all the stuff you don't need...unwanted themes, foreign flags and so on. The resulting upload will be less than 8Mb if you do.
2. Use an FTP client for uploads. FileZilla is good (and free) or Fetch for the Mac.
3. Read the Wiki mentioned in the post above
4. Use FTP to upload your GEDCOM to the "index" folder

If you are using FileZlla, you can set permissions here as well - right click on any file name or folder, select File Attributes, then set "index" to 777, and your GEDCOM file in the index folder to 777. Do the same for the "media" folder - and (if you plan to use maps) the "modules" folder as well.

Also find the file "config.php" and set it to 777.

Now, the confusion over what to name things! We are all used to the conventional xxxxxx.rootschat.com, but for PGV, we have some changes.

Reading down the configuration page, you will have MySQL as the Database Type, and localhost as the host.

Your user name will be xxxxxx_rootschat_net, and this will also be the database name, 2 boxes down. Note the underbar in place of the dot!!

AFAIK, that takes care of probably 85% of the setup problems.

Get in touch if anything I've said is unclear. Next post, I'll show you which files you can safely delete before upload!

Before you upload anything, these files can be deleted:

In images/flags - anything you don't want. For the English among us, en-gb.gif is probably all you need

In languages - if you want only English language stuff, delete everything that doesn't have a name like xxxxx.en.php. The CHANGELOG stuff isn't needed, so for one language, only 5 files should remain

In places, erase all folders except "eng" - but make sure you *keep* the individual files, not in folders, that have .js and so on after their name. In my setup here, there are 7 of them.

In themes, keep at least "minimal" and "standard". You can delete the rest if you like, and add them back at any time.

Now to keep out the nasties...

bots or spiders are usually automated web-crawlers that search engines use to find and index your web site. If they didn't operate, search engines like Google would have nothing to show you when you use it to search.

Google is benign - it won't intrude into your workspace, or eat up bandwidth by testing each and every page/option on your site. But that doesn't apply to everyone.

The ideal would be to let search engines examine your site only at the highest level, and ban it from drilling down.

So, make a file named "robots.txt", made up of one line:

User-agent: * Disallow: /

Save that, then transfer it to the highest level in your webspace. Instant protection (and the webmaster will thank you...)

Okay guys, I'm probably being completely thick here but where do I put PHP on my Rootschat file manager. This is what i get when I log in, do I just create a PHP folder and put it in there to start with?

I don't usually use the RC file manager, so am not sure what i'm doing with it.

Cheers

Dinie

Hi Dinie,

On the right of your manager in the screen shot you show in your post you have a button called make directory and on the left of that is a white oblong box. Just type in the name you want for your PhpGedView tree and click on the button. That will create a new folder to keep your php tree separate from the rest of your web site.

The URL to your space will then be:
http://Diniesname.rootschat.net/newfoldername/index.php
or even
http://Diniesname.rootschat.net/newfoldername/index/index.php
This second version redirects you to the first and I don't know why it is set up like that. Any answers?

When you fire up any PHP script base, such as the one you are building here, the system looks for a file named "index.php" - so all you need to do is point to the first example given above. The second method shown is just an inbuilt redundancy...

Thanks Paul,

I've recently bought a book to learn PHP, MySQL and Apache but I have a long, long way to go. Just setting up the trees was an experience in itself. I started with PhpGedView 3 and then put up 4 after my site had to be wiped. Then discovered that 4 would not go up so went back to 3 and updated! More fickle than a *****, I hope none are following this thread or I'm in deep trouble, lol.

I like your attempt to put some order into PhpGedView but I get the idea that you will have to put up an entire website/MySQL forum on the subject to get something coherent. If you dive deep into Rootschat you'll find notes all over the shop. On the one hand I wish everything were clearer on the other hand I know I'm learning more by having to find things out the hard way so....

Anyway, I think the big project for this or any site is to make sense of the trees and the wealth of genealogical info on it. We are all diving around trying to put up our trees and help each other but so far I have had only one person contact me re the info on my tree. She was a cousin and so it was a useful contact. From that, I wish I had more time to troll through others' trees and maybe make more contacts with others. My sister, who is doing most of the research has physically met cousins from around Britain, Australia & America and has been in contact with others from Africa and has lines to follow up in continental Europe. All very exciting when it takes off.

And your tree, Paul, I can't find a link to it. Not up yet or on another site somewhere?

All the best, falcybe

G'day...

I was quite daunted by the entire concept when I started, but have become a bit involved in what is going on. I learned some PHP, made the usual mistakes..but it keeps me busy.

I actually manage 4 sites, my own and 3 others. They are all password protected to obviate Oz privacy laws. But the main one (if you want to look at the front page!) is www.pcug.org.au/~pblair/phpGedView  2 of my sites are England-related, centered on Bethnal Green and Blandford.

I also have a "future" site, which has the most recent working files (for better and worse), hence my asking for an upgrade to the PHP version currently available to users on Rootschat. The future is nearer than you might think.

If people are having problems getting to first base, I'm happy to try to help. I would need some sort of access to their webspace and so on, but as I have a (deliberately) short memory span, I would soon forget how I ever got there!! Roll Eyes

G'day Paul, or goodnight? 11:53 Sunday night in Belgium to your 9:53 Monday morning.

I love your front page, lol. Pity about privacy laws in Australia but that brings me onto another point which I tried to get changed on Rootschat and as you are trying to get things moving I thought I'd run it by you.

If you click on the globe in my posts you eventually get to my tree/s. In there, if you change the URL in the address bar to include the index folder and the names of the gedcoms then you can download them. I have not got any living or private people up but I did to begin with before this problem was pointed out to me. Quite a lot of other Rootschatters have living people up which they have marked as "to be seen by family only" on their tree. Like me to begin with they don't know.

I also have another site (phpged 3 only!) where even people with logins get told NO when they try to download a ged like this. There I have living up as they really are kept private.

Now, do you know how the other site (Lycos) achieves this because Rootschat doesn't seem to know. I asked a while back and just got told, well don't put living up. More importantly, how would Rootschat achieve blocking attempts to download geds through the back door? It would be a nice improvement.

cheers, falcybe

I rather fancy that it there should be no such access on a properly configured site. If I go to my local server, and type in the path to the index folder, I get :

You don't have permission to access /~pblair/phpGedView/index/ on this server. Nor does anyone else.

On your site, I get the Rootschat "can't find that page", which it probably can, but the response is more polite.

The only possible way I might be able to do that would be if I had an actual session running, and the door was open to me from that.

Maybe this is one for the PGV community to debate? Go to http://sourceforge.net/forum/?group_id=55456 and create an account. Your messages will be read by the programmers, who know all the twists and turns.

Hi,

Is this the path you used? http://arthurfhayden.rootschat.net/phpview/index/howard-hidden.ged or one of the other geds, the names of which are visible on the status bar, on going to the trees. When I or others (which is how I came to know about the problem) do that, I'm asked if I want to open or save this file. I can then see the nuts and bolts of the tree. So if you think that sourceforge can help with configuring the site I'll go there.

Whooohooo!

I get your point now. I didn't try that path. From here, it doesn't even ask if you want the GEDCOM.

RootsChat seems to have a *major* problem here.......! There is no way this should be happening!

How do we get some attention to this? (something you have probably been trying to do!)
