Hi Swimmer,
It did seem that the fishermen and the farmers never did mix marriages although I believe they were all related if you go back further. I don't think they were catholic though because i have seen christening dates on the IGI instead of birth dates. I checked IGI for Magdalene but there are a lot of Milnes and its hard to match when you don't have any dates to go by. Its possible she is related but it would help to know her dates of birth and death and place of birth.
If you want to exchange copies of our direct lineages send me a PM with your email address and I'll get it off to you. Its always great to find more cousins.
Jim

I am looking for a Geddes connection. Emma Margaret Geddes (born 18 June 1904) married James Milton. Both were teachers variously at Buckie and Portessie. Emma had siblings, Nan, Jean, Grace, Isabelle and Bill. I would like to find who their parents were.
Cheers,
Maggie

Hi Maggie
Welcome to Rootschat
Emma Margaret Geddes's parents were
George Geddes, master tailor
and
Margaret Duncan
They married June 8th 1888, Edinburgh.
If you register with the Scotland's People site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, you will be able to view and download their marriage certificate and find out who, in turn, their parents are. It's pay to view but this search has only cost me 6 units (1 unit = 20p).
Happy Christmas

Oh - thank you so much for the information. I'll have to do the plodding without scotlandspeople though owing to the necessity of a credit card. Thank you for using your credit for me on this since I'm a total stranger. It now begs the question....what were they doing down in Edinburgh? I felt that the family were locals since both Geddes and Duncan are Buckie names.
Cheers,
Maggie

Buckie James D, 7, b. Buckie Jeanie, 4, b. b. Buckie George, 2, b. Buckie Grace G, 1, b. Buckie Annie D, 2 months, b. Buckie
Next door was John Geddes, 44 also a tailor and clothier, wife Charlotte, 46 and six children all born Buckie.
Not sure waht George and Margaret were doing in Edinburgh in 1888. It's definitely them. I'll have a wee lookie.

Joe
Think I have the answer to Margaret's mother. I think it was down wrongly on the marriage cert. On Maggies birth reg:
22 July 1863 Margaret Duncan. Fochabers, Bellie, Morayshire
Parents - James Duncan, blacksmith and Elizabeth Duncan, maiden surname Gordon.
Margaret = Elizabeth= Isabella. Oh the Scots have so many names
They married July 12 1859, Fochabers

That would be great Joe
I've been suffering from poor conectivity over the last few days and am trying to catch up.
I would think that the IGI (www.familysearch.org |) might have info on the earlier marriages/births
