Marriage Certificate - 1849
« on: Saturday 15 July 06 19:22 BST (UK) »

Hi

I wondered if anyone might be able to help me with a query regarding a marriage certificate I have?

In the section where they record the bride and grooms ages they've put minor for the groom and full age for the bride.  I'm a bit puzzled because according to the IGI and census returns etc the groom should have been about 20 years old.  Has anyone come across this before and any idea why they would have put that?  Everything else on the certificate fits with the info I have so I am 99.9% certain I've got the right one.  Huh

If he was 20 years old then he was a minor and would need the consent of a parent to marry. The age of adulthood (the age of majority) was 21. It was only lowered to 18, in I think 1968, when the right to vote was also reduced to 18 from 21.
