G'day Amber,

I tried searching for you but could only find a Richard Eddy born in August 1871 in Pendeen, Cornwall.

Did your Eddy's go to South Africa?  Is that where he died?

You could try checking Passenger lists - there are loads of links re South Africa - just look for them right here on RootsChat and happy checking.

I will get back to you if I can find anything - don't hold your breath though LOL.

G'day Ambers,

Don't know if you're interested but I found an Elizabeth Eddy (21) dairymaid born Penzance and a Thomas Eddy (servant - 55 born Sancreed - farm labourer), on the 1861 Census listed with my Urens.

Most interesting - I have a nephew who is interested in his Cornish descent in South Africa. His name is Friggens. They were also miners - does that name appear on any of those lists?

G'day Hack,

Have you or your nephew checked the South African Mailing List on Rootsweb.com?  Lots of valuable information there.  Here's the link:

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Immigration/SOUTH-AFRICA-IMMIGRANTS-BRITISH.html

I was checking the Passenger Lists and sadly found that my Gr-great grandmother had died on board the ship before she reached South Africa.  No wonder I couldn't find a death recorded anywhere - now I know.    By the way if you check out the Message Boards, they also have a list of all births and deaths on the ships too.

Good luck

Hi CP,

Many thanks for the info but sadly not my rellies.

Richard Eddy b 1871 Gold Mined in Johannesburgh at some time during the years he is missing on the UK Census 1891 and 1901 but suspect he might have tried other Countries also.

He got married in Cornwall 1898 but was not on the 1901 census with his wife Janie (Elizabeth Jane) and their son Richard b 1899...... he died in Cornwall in  September 1902 at 31 years.
Richard Eddy is a common name on Passenger lists but none with the correct birth date...I hope to see him travelling with another person with a name I will recognise as he would have been very young  to go by himself. As he was given a Gold Nougat he must have been Gold Mining for some years...I think?

Having not being born, married or died abroad I think it's going to be hard to find ggrandad.

Regards Ambers

Ambers, I know this won't help with your Richard Eddy but I have just found out that one of my ancestors was an Eddy (maiden name).

Elizabeth UREN (formerly BOTHERAS)  (nee EDDY) born 1820 and married to Rchard Uren.  Tell me if this links up with yours??

Thanks CP,

Lol, we might land up rellies yet. Grin

I have only got back to 1841, and with some many Richard Eddy's in the Parish Records can't be sure but will get back to you.

I am still having problems making a 100% connection with my Richard Eddy b1871 to the Eddy/Trembath family, and I am waiting for some signatures from the CRO that hopefully will confirm it.......plus hoping to find a Will.

Do you know if Elizabeth b1820, fathers name was James Eddy?

If so we are following the same family.

Hi CP,

Just checked Cornwall On-line Parsih Records and found:

Elizabeth Eddy,spinster/ father William/Labourer married 13.12.1845 to: Daniel Botheras/Batchelor/ father John Botheras...witnesses John and matthew Eddy.

Is this the one?

I didn't find her re-marriage to Richard Uren though.

Amber, my apologies.  Elizabeth EDDY (bapt/born 11/6/1820 Sancreed) married John UREN and NOT Richard UREN.

On the 1861 Census, John Uren was 54 and Elizabeth was 41 (she was previously BOTHERAS) as I mentioned earlier.   Also listed are John and Edward and Daniel BOTHERAS and it looks like these were her children from the previous marriage.   Elizabeth Ann EDDY w. 21 born Penzance abt 1840 and a Thomas EDDY w. 55 born Gulvall appear on the same Census at the same house.

I only became aware of the EDDY name being linked to UREN when I was baffled about Elizabeth's previous marriage and name.  I had confirmation of this just the other day all the way from a new found rellie living at Trescrowan Farm, Cornwall, and it all made sense.

Ambers, I don't know who Elizabeth's father was.  Sorry.  But I guess I will find out when I start searching LOL.

So it looks like we might just be rellies after all.  Grin

Hi Cp,

I couldn't find Parish Records but on Ancestry found a marriage: John Botheras /Elizabeth Eddy 1842, May qtr Penzance,
Then in 1858 Elizabeth Botheras/ John Uren, March qtr Penzance. which works with William H Uren birth 1860.

I wonder if the Elizabeth 1841 and Thomas Eddy are connected as they  living in the same house 1861?

I didn't find the Botheras family on the 1851 though.

Hi Ambers,

I'm sure those two Eddys are tied up to the Uren family.  I have a hunch and I am going to check it out LOL.  Just call me Corny Detective. Grin

Apparently the Botheras children from Elizabeth Eddys previous marriage, all went to the USA.

Hugs

Hi CP

Oh lol, maybe they are with my Gold Mining rellies Nicholas Thomas and Richard Eddy...I will leave it up to Detective Constable Grin CornishPasty to sort out.

I have  traced a Witness to Richard Eddy's b1871-- marriage in 1898 to Eliza Jane Thomas b1874.

Margaret Matthews formerly Ninnis, her mother was Mary Eddy b1842, I guess there will be a few to choose from Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Happy hunting...Hugs Ambers

LOL Ambers.  Too funny. Grin

I guess that's good news about finding the witness because every tiny bit of information is another piece of the puzzle.  Have made a note to include that little snippet. Wink

Let's hope we can find this elusive Richard. Grin
