My family has never known where my grandfather came from, when he was born or who his family may have been. After many years of searching, I have finally found some record of his army service, filed in the Burnt Records at Kew. All that has survived are his attestation papers and they are in a poor condition with some of the vital information almost unreadable.
It is possible to make out that the county in which he was born began with the letters "MIDD...." (the rest of the word is missing) so this must surely be Middlesex. However, the name of the actual parish is more difficult because, again, most of the word is scorched or burnt away. It looks as though it begins "BA...." with a possible upward pen-stroke next and maybe another after that.It could almost be taken for the beginning of "BATTERSEA", except that I know that wasn't in Middlesex. Barnet is the only Middlesex place-name beginning "BA" that I can find on any maps.
No-one bearing my grandfather's very unusual surname was registered in Barnet in late 1882 or early 1883 nor does he feature on any census...although there was a family with his surname in neighbouring Enfield. I have no local knowledge of Middlesex,so am completely at a loss as to where he was born.
Can anyone with knowledge of Middlesex in the late 19th/early 20th centuries help with suggestions as to what this place name might be please?
Thanks.
Ann

The surname is LENHART and there is only one family with this name, spelt in this way, in the entire country on the censuses up to 1901. Ancestry will tell you there are more...but every one has proved to be a case of mis-reading other names.
The LENHART family I have found lived first in Enfield and then they moved to Tottenham...all Middlesex, you see! None of those place names which you have kindly listed seems to fit what it says on my grandfather's attestation papers. He has always been a great mystery to us and it looks as though that state of affairs is set to continue!

Thanks very much Gadget.
BAKER STREET, ENFIELD looks quite promising as it would fit with the family I have already found.

The Father of the Lenhart family, in Enfield 1861 age 28 and 1871 age 38 came from Germany Hesse Dortmunstat. (Excuse my spelling of the last place it was no too clear on the census.) His Christian name was Ignaz , it might account for the reason you can't find him. A lot of Germans came to this country well before the first world war and settled here. Hope this helps you Patricia

Ann
Do you have a copy of those fragments that you might be able to put up here - just so that we can have a look and see if it is definitely a 'Ba' ?

I know all about the family of IGNAZ LENHART who came from Hesse-Darmstadt as I have amassed quite a large file of records and documents for them over the years. Through a German contact I even have details of his ancestors going back to c1700. What I would like to do -and can't - is prove a link between them and my grandfather. There is no birth registration for him and no census record. Very odd.
I will try and post a copy of the relevant entry on my grandfather's attestation papers. I have a poor quality photocopy, taken from the film held at Kew and it may not reproduce too well. The researcher who found this for me had another look at it when she was at Kew at the weekend. She says that, when the film is blown up, it seems to be "Ba" or "Be" with possibly a "t" or "l" after that. My copy does look as though it is "Ba".
Thanks for your help and interest.

Thanks Ann
I've tried to reduce the dark areas. Problem is that it definitely says 'in the parish of' and then it does look like Batt but Battersea is not in Middlesex
Could it be Barnet?

My problem exactly Gadget! I thought it looked more like Battersea than anything else...but as you say, Battersea never was in Middlesex! I have searched the 1901 census for my grandfather - any Harry born in iether Middlesx or Battersea 1882/1883 who was a boiler maker but without any luck. However, a few times I've come across Battersea, MIDDLESEX entered as a birthplace. Could it be that when the county of London was created in (I think) 1889, it lead to some confusion? Most of the old county of Middlesex fell within what became London but Battersea was also included. Just a thought.

I've been playing around with adjustments in Photoshop and can't quite bring up enough to be sure BUT I'm more convinced now that it's Barnet - the letters that look like two 't's are a large r and n. I'll go play some more.

No clues from his marriage certificate. I have had this document for about 15 years and it contains red herrings. He married in Kent in 1906 when he gave his age as 25. According to the age on his attestation papers from a year earlier, this should have been 23 - but my grandmother was 25 so maybe he wanted to conceal the age difference. However, the information given about his father is clearly meant to deceive. It names father as HARRY LENHART (deceased) a journeyman boiler maker. I have spent years trying to trace this man without any luck. I now realize that these are the details for my grandfather himself! My guess is that he was illegitimate and wanted to conceal that too....or he was quite determined that no-one would ever know who he really was!
I would dearly like to make "Barnet" of his birthplace because it would help to bring him closer to the Enfield Lenharts. I have to be careful not to make the evidence fit as I want it to though so will have to be content with keeping all this on the back burner yet again.
Thanks to you all for your input.
Just seen your latest posting Gadget. I am very grateful to you for this. I don't have a very good photo editing programme on my computer and wouldn't be very good at using it if I did!

Just been looking at the red channel, Ann. This is probably the best one to view it in. Thank goodness you scanned in colour .
The third letter certainly looks like the funny 'r' in Harry.
