Ever Hopeful!

Hi, this is indeed complicated but very thrilling to me as it's opened up a whole new branch or two.
Firstly, I hadn't seen the 1841 census and will look at that later on today, BUT in the 1861 it definitely says Sarah Critchell, unmarried, servant aged 23, born Bridport. Does she tie in with any of your Sarah's? (The Sarah Critchell of John and Ann was baptised in Bridport 1825, so that makes her older than this one. We may yet find another of the right age.)
At the moment I'm on the IGI pages and looking at the Barrack Street Independent parish records, where there are a ton of Cornish baptisms, and I'm sorting them into their respective families. I already found a few more children of John Cornish and Mary Critchell including "Samuel Critchell Cornish" born 1823. I'll keep you posted.

The IGI has a Sarah Critchell born 1836/37 in Bridport, daughter of John C. and Ann Gale. Is it possible that the one you have found in 1825 was another child of the same parents, who died young. Names were very often re-used in these circumstances.
I can't find Sarah in 1841. John and Ann are there with other offspring, but no Sarah. It is possible that she was:
a) staying with other family members and they have put her down under a different name, or they thought her parents would put her name on theirs so they didn't bother. or b) they just missed her off. It is not at all unheard of for someone to be missing from a census.
In 1851, John, Ann and family, including Sarah, aged 13, are entered as Crittchill and all together in Bridport.
I am assuming that John Critchell was the brother of Mary, who married John Cornish and that Sarah, aged 23 and living with them in 1861, is therefore Mary Cornish's neice.
We will just have to keep working on this one.

All extremely interesting - and many thanks. this is a work in progress. One quick question...
Earlier when browsing the census for John Critchell and Ann, I found them in Bridport in 1841. I noticed that two doors down is the Gale family, and now I know (as you point out) John's wife was Ann nee Gale. I think it might be her brother John Gale and family.
Living with that Gale family is a 67-year old called (I think, handwriting is not clear) Jane Cornick. She is said to be a "servant" but more likely to be a nanny or member of the family acting as housekeeper I feel.
Anyway, I wondered at the time whether this was an earlier spelling of Cornish, but I laid it to one side. Today on IGI amongst the baptisms in Bridport I found several for variations of Corneck/Cornick etc.
So it's just an idle thought. Had you come across these variations for Cornish?

Hi Jen' & others !
I'm new to the whole RootsChat experience and am finding it a valuable resource ! I too have CRITCHELLs in Dorset . John (b abt 1815 , Upwey) and Ann (nee Tizard ? b abt 1808 , Maiden Newton) . Daughters Unity ( b March 1838 , Radipole or Upwey) , Sarah (b abt 1840 , Upwey) & son George ( b abt 1844 , Upwey) John was a gardener & Ann a School Mistress . Found them in 1851 & '61 Census' . Unity ( sometime transcribed as Vanity or even Eunice !) married in Westbury-on-Trym in 1864 to widower Samuel Jackson from Nantwich who apparently fell in love with her when he saw a picture of her ( How ? Where ? I don't know !) They had 8 children together , their 2nd child Harry Ernest JACKSON (B 1866 m 1892 d 1944) was my Grt-Grandfather.
If anyone else has any connections with these I'd be happy to share other info .
Cheers Andy
