Court Quarter Sessions - Middlesex/London
« on: Thursday 28 October 04 22:49 BST (UK) »

Does anyone happen to know where I could possibly get a copy of the Court Quarter Sessions for Middlesex/London?

I have been advised that I may just find details of my 3rd Gt Granddad's birth on them as I believe he could have been illegitimate.

My reasons for this belief are that on his marriage certificate, there is no name for a father, it is just blank.

If anyone can advise or shed some light on it I would be most grateful.

Kind regards

Dee

Hi Cougar

Unfortunately I don't have a mothers name.  The only info I have is my 3rd Gt Grandfathers name of Henry James Smith and I believe he was born about 1821 around the Islington area.  His marriage certificate, dated 1844, stated that he was of full age.

To be honest, I have tried not to get my hopes up too much as with a name like Smith especially in this area I feel is going to be a huge task.

Kind regards

I just had a quick look at 1851 and there is only 1 Henry J indexed so far that could be possible but he was born at Aylesham (can't read county)
Will put this on my 'to do' list tomorrow as today will be out most of the day.
Hopefully we can find him.
Didn't find him in the Court of Petty Sessions, but that is only a limited search so don't give up.

Hi Cougar

Many thanks for your help so far, Aylsham is/was in Buckinghamshire which is easily accessible to the London/Middlesex area.

I am going to keep an open mind with regards to Henry James Smith as, although he married in Islington, experience has shown from my other family records that it is a very distinct possibility that he was not necessarily born in London/Middlesex at all, an example of which is below.

My Great Granddad William Lewis Long was born in 1862 and I had some real fun finding him.  I knew that he married in Middlesex but that he was born in Woostock in Oxfordshire (from 1901 Census).  Having taken the time to think laterally and with lots of assistance, I finally found his birth certificate - registered as Lewis William Long at Wootton, Oxford.

If it helps Henry James married Harriet Page, so he should appear in cenuses from 1851 as Henry (head) and Harriet (wife).  I also have details that their son, William Smith, was born circa 1850 so he may also be present from the 1851 census.

Kind regards

Dee

Hi Dee,
Could this be them?   If so you will need to ask someone to look them up as I do not have the 1861 census.

Hi Cougar

Yes, that's my bunch Grin

Many thanks for that, its fantastic.  Hopefully if I can get some kind person to look it up in the 1861 census I may be able to find a place of birth for Henry (not sure if that was included on the 1861 tho).

Many thanks again

Kind regards Dee

Hi Dee,
Post the reference numbers and district etc on the London lookups - pretty sure that is where Pancras comes in, or at least it does with 1851.  From memory there are a few who can check it for you - sorry but it isn't an area that I have.
Glad though it was the right one - and yes you should get place of birth.
