I know this is going to sound a bit dumb to most users - but please bear with me - I am new to all this, but why is a topic locked?

Welcome to RootsChat.
There are no dumb questions, asking a question is the quickest way to knowledge.  And it is what RootsChat is for.
Topics are locked to stop people replying to them. Usually because we want you to ask a question in a different place. It can be a it confusing until you are used to RootsChat. But there is a method to our madness.
Which topic are you asking about?
BTW, I was just composing an FAQ for this question.

Thank you Kazza for your quick reply - I was just interested to know about the locked topics - I have seen a few items when I have been looking around the site.
It certainly is a little confusing but no doubt I will get the hang of it eventually.
