« on: Wednesday 19 July 06 10:23 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know if the 1926 Irish census will be released early as was the 1911?

Hi cran

Under law, census returns in Britain/Ireland are not normally opened to the public until 100 years have elapsed. Because of the dearth of pre-1900 data due to the destruction of the Four Courts building in 1922, the Irish Government waived this rule for the 1901 and 1911 census returns and these are open to the public at the National Archives in Dublin. They are also available on microfilm and can be accessed at good libraries and genealogical centres around the world. The 1926 census returns ( there was no census in 1921 due to the civil unrest in the country ) will not be made public until 2026!

The recent Genealogy & Heraldry Bill aims to make the 1926 census of the old Irish Free State (now the Republic) publically available by affording it 'special heritage' status, reducing the closure period from 100 to 80 years.

Thanks Silverhawk,

The Irish Genealogy & Heraldry Bill, 2006 has created a special category for the returns of the first Census of Ireland which was taken following the War of Independence when the Irish Free State was established by the 1920 Government of Ireland Act. The 1926 census, the first one which was taken since 1911, is an essential resource for the study of genealogy and social history in the Irish Free State. The lengthy closure of the 1926 census created a huge gap in our understanding of the period which included the First World War (1914-18), the Easter Rising (1916), the War of Independence(1919-21) and the Civil War (1921-22). The creation of the special heritage category for the 1926 census enables family historians to check records twenty years earlier than anticipated.

Hi everyone

Thanks for your replies, (I have thanked you personally I hope too!)  does it mean that the 1926 census is already around somewhere - 80 years leading to 2006?  Have I read your message correctly?

Regards
