SILVEY - Orphan? How to proceed?
« on: Monday 17 July 06 20:36 UTC (UK) »

Hello, I have the following information for a Thomas William Silvey.

1891 Census
Thomas W Silney 23 Colliery Weighman
Emily Silney 22
Living Town St. Barwick in Elmet

1901 Census
Thomas W Silvey Head 33 Colliery Weighman Born: Yorks Doncaster
Emily Silvey Wife 32 Born: Yorks Thorner
+ 2 children.  Living Back Lane, Barwick in Elmet

Marriage Jan 1891 Thomas William Silvey 23 to Emily Nettleton 22 at Barwick in Elmet.
Thomas is a batchelor with profession of weighman and residing in Laverack.

The marriage certificate has no fathers or mothers name for Thomas, and both witnesses are Emily's relations.  I have not been able to find Thomas on the 1881 or 1871 census.

Any suggestions?

Ooo I like this one

Checked the census first, nothing.
Checked FreeBMD, nothing.
Checked images of BMD 1867 - 1870, nothing
Checked census again using various ways including Thomas W, bn 1869 (give or take a year), Doncaster. This coughed up a couple of answers including Thomas W Goodhall, bn 1868 Doncaster, living Barwick in Elmet !!!!!!!!!! Opened it up

1881 RG11/4710
Folio 103
Page 1

Laverack Road, Barwick in Elmet, Yorkshire.
John H Goodhall, head, married, 31, coal miner, bn Laverack.
Sarah A, wife, married, 31, bn Doncaster.
Thomas W, son, single, 13, coal miner, bn Doncaster.
Sarah A, daugher, 10, scholar, bn Garforth.
John James, son, 7, scholar, bn Laverack.
Alice, daughter, 4, scholar, bn Laverack.
Richard, son, 3, bn Laverack.
Lillie, daughter, 11 months, bn Laverack.
John Silvey, boarder, married, 26, coal miner, bn Doncaster.

Not sure where this leaves you but I have found the Goodhalls in 1871 and then the entire family just disappear.

regards, Sarah

Wow, you guys are amazing.

I thought I'd searched the census really well, covering as many variations of Silvey as I could think of, never imagined he might have a completely different surname! I guess I still have alot of learning to do Embarrassed

Thanks for all your help, I shall now investigate all this new information.

This seems to be throwing up more questions than answers.

Focusing on Sarah Ann Silvey, as I can find no birth record of Thomas William, she could be his mother, giving birth two years before she married John H Goodall.  I searched the BMD indexes for a Sarah Ann Silvey between 1849-1851.

Silvey Sarah Ann Birth Dec 1849 Leeds

This leaves me wondering where Winterton, Lincs comes into this Huh where she states as her birth place in the census 1871 and 1891.

I tried also to find her on the 1861 census, before her marriage, but no luck.  Sad  More investigating to be done!

Just found this birth, which I think is the one for the Sarah Ann born Winterton, Lincolnshire. Winterton is a few miles away from where I live and would come under the Glanford Brigg district -

Im wondering if the 1851 census above, with parents James and Ann and children James and Mary, is the same family, with Sarah wrongly enumerated as Mary??

I guess the birth certificate will confirm details. Let us know if you need any more lookups once you have the cert

Good Luck
