Hi,
This is a real longshot! I have quite a number of ancestors by the name of Nightingale, some of whom emigrated to Quebec, Canada, more than likely from England, some born in this country. This surname is related to my mother's ancestors in Montreal, Quebec.
Canadian census entries for this name indicate that they were born in England which is not much to go on. Rootschat has been a great help to me in the past so I decided to give it a try. If anyone in the UK is researching this name and found their relative/s have fallen off the face of the earth, here are a couple:
William Nightingale b. abt. 1825; md. Mary Ann Rourke, b. Ireland; their son, Walter, md. my gt. aunt, Margaret Anne GEEVES in Montreal 07 March 1918.
Extract from the 1881 Canadian Census Ref. # Nat'l. Archives Film No. C-13192, District 46, Sub-District A, Division 3, Page No. 8, Household No. 40 Census Place: Lauzon Ward, Lévis Lévis, Québec
NIGHTINGALE, William, Marr., Male, English, Age 56, Born Angleterre (England), Occupation: Arrimeur (dockworker), Religion: Episcopal. NIGHTINGALE, Mary Ann, Marr., Female, Scottish, Age 50, Born Ireland, Episcopal. NIGHTINGALE, Sarah, Female, English, Age 24, Born Québec, Episcopal. NIGHTINGALE, William, Male, English, Age 17, Born Québec, Occupation, not given, Episcopal. NIGHTINGALE, Henry, Male, English, Age 15, Born Québec, Episcopal.
Here's another one with more information:
Ernest NIGHTINGALE b. sometime around 1800- unknown location, likely England. The following is a notation from one of his daughter's marriages:
On June 13, at the Church of Notre Dame, Montreal, Canada East, by the Rev. V. Sorim, Mr. Francis Duquet, of Montreal, to Louisa Maria, daughter of Ernest Nightingale, Esq., and granddaughter of the late Sir Charles E. Nightingale, Bart., formerly of Kneesworth Hall, Cambridgeshire, England.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Dorothy

The date is certainly out from the guessed one....However you may want to check out an extracted file on the I.G.I. ...An Ernest born June 6th 1821 - Royston, Hertford, England to a Charles Ethelstone Nightingale and mother Maria
all the best, J.J.

Have you checked the 1901 census? It gives the exact birthdate. If not here is a link that might help. This link will take you to the index of names starting with N. http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html
Some of the spellings Nighingale 1 Nightegale 1 Nightegele 1 Nightengale 22 Nightgale 2 Nightingale 128 Nigtegale 1
They are not all located in Quebec.

Hi Janice! Found that Dorothy got more information since, just hadn't updated...
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,171910.msg815975.html#msg815975 there's more postings, but haven't read them... This was moved from a general site to Canada, so I think wanted more on the other side of the pond as she's in Ottawa, but we'll see ... J.J.

I have an Ann NIGHTINGALE marrying my ggg gf Samuel HARRIS, 1803 in England. They had several children in Wiltshire and then emigrated to Upper Canada. I found them on the Montreal Emmigrant Society list being moved to Preston Ontario July 1832.
They have many descendents throughout Ontario and the western provinces.

Hi Lindsay,
I haven't found any of mine in Ontario as yet. I'm too busy tracing the ones I have.
What is the Montreal Immigrant list you mentioned and where can I access it?

Dorothy: You can access this information on the following link: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/022-500-e.html
Mid page there is an Immigration heading. The address is http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/mes/index-e.html
for the Montreal Emigrant Society Passage Book (1832)
I was lucky to find the Samuel HARRIS from Wiltshire for whom I was searching in this limited record and view the actual page.He married Ann NIGHTINGALE I presume in England, but I haven't been able to confirm that.
I searched this for NIGHTINGALE and there were no hits, but perhaps you have some other surnames that may have arrived at that time.
Hope this may help. Lindsay

Lindsay did you see the newer extracted IGI file for Feb 20th 1803 marriage Samuel Harris & Ann Nightingale in Westbury, Wiltshire seems a little early, doesn't it? or was the family grown when they came over? No I see it works for the children , as also the Christenings of Elizabeth in 1808 & twins Mary Ann & Jane in 1816 are on there

Thank you for the information. I shall check. I haven't researched the family lately and will have to review my files.
