Hello Kim

Have had a look for you and can't find them in any of the 4 Bo'ness Churchyards.

That's not to say they aren't buried there. They may not have a headstone.

If I may make a similar request  Roll Eyes

Is there any pre-1855 headstone info for people called Alexander black, Grizel Russell or Jane Russell in Whitburn?
In fact details of anybody with the surname Black would be helpful.

Can't find any of the Black or Russell names you mention. However, there is a Grizzel Watt married to a Robert Russell.

There are 11 Black MIs and 10 Russell MIs.

If you can be more specific about first names, I'll have a look for you.

To type out 21 MIs would take me too long.

Thanks jean jeanie for that. I have very little else on the Russell's to go on.

Many of those called Black probably have a link to mine as they were well established in Whitburn at that time.

I know there is a grave still there (although I've never been there to see it yet) of my ancestor William Black (b. 1700 d. 1742) and his wife Mary Tod (d. 1767).

If any one gravestone surnamed Black has a load of info on other family members that would perhaps be the best bet?

Cheers, DelBoy.

Hi Delboy

Your ancestor's MI reads as follows:-

William Black died 2/5/1742, wife Mary Tod died 4/12/1767, son James died Dec 1800 aged 78, his wife Agnes Mochrie died Oct 1802 aged 73. James Black son William died 16/4/1829 aged 68, his wife?Mrs Black died 1/2/1836 aged 80. On the West side are the emblems of mortality.

In the next plot to this are:-

John Black died 24/11/1817 aged either 29 or 39, wife Isobel or Isabella Russell died 3/11/1854 aged 68. two sons 1809 aged 1, son David died 27/10/1832 aged 24.

In the next plot to this are:-

Robert Beith died 24/3/1833, son William died 13/12/1837, son John Died 31/12/1886 aged 71, his wife Janet Russell died 9/3/1894 aged 74, children James died 1845 aged 11 months, James died 1847 aged 20 months, Marion died 1859 aged 5. (It does say James twice)

The only other likely one might be:-

James Steele in Fala Mill died 26/3/1879 aged 84, wife Barbara Black died 2/2/1866 aged 67, son Alexander died 2/11/1857 aged 23.

Thanks for the offer sicknote but it's really just the pre-1855 stuff that I'm needing.

Excellent stuff Jeanie, that fills in a few blanks. I didn't know there was more info on William Blacks grave.

Thanks again, DelBoy.

Hi Jean Jeanie,
Do you have an MI for an Isabella Gardner m/s Laing, born Rafford, Elginshire 14/3/1795. She married John Matthew Gardner 1830 in Bo'ness.
In 1841 and 1851 they had a Pub on North Street, Bo'ness but both are gone by 1861.

Hi Alastair

Good news and bad news.

There is an MI in Bo'ness Church Wynd Lower which could be her. Unfortunately the stone is very badly flaked and the only words visible are as follows:-

wife, Isabella Laing. Eldest son John ?.5. 1836. 4 children.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
That must be the right headstone. They had a son John baptized 25/12/1831 who was not with them in 1841 so the 1836 date must be his death. Also, including this John they had four children. Pity about the rest of the inscription though.
Many thanks for your time and trouble doing the look-up for me. Much appreciated.

John Henderson ( a seaman), husband of Margaret Smith and father of John, died between 1829/30 and 1841. I use these dates as son is 12 on 1841 census and wife a widow.
