(Many non-Welsh people are unaware of the number of Welsh people that went over to Patagonia to create a new colony. Welsh is still spoken in some communities in Patagonia, with the language evolving within the Argentinian culture)

Do you know of any people going to Argentina c1880 from Nottingham?  My grandfather was a lacemaker and took his family there.  Their address was Madeira Port Works, Beunos Aires.  Would love to know if there was an organised emigration scheme.  Have found no answers at Nottingham University.

I am new to RootsChat and have just found your post while browsing around....

I also have relatives somewhere in Argentina, probably in or near Buenos Aires, but we have had no family contact since the 1930s.

After much fruitless searching on websites on the Internet, I eventually found someone who specialised in doing the research on the ground in Argentina, albeit for a fee. As I felt that unless I started the search very soon, the link with any living relatives might soon be gone forever, I decided to go ahead and sent some money!! I have been delighted with the results of the work done and although I have not yet had a contact for a living relative, I have been able to find out where my father's cousins lived and who they married, etc. I really do believe that I have had good value for my - relatively modest - outlay. I am now considering, having got this far, whether to pay any more to allow them to pursue the matter further on my behalf!

If you would like to know more, I can pass their contact details on to you.

Hi there
Great to hear from you.  My query is not really where my ancestors lived but why they went, what job my grandfather did and how they got there.  All I know is that he worked at the Madeira Port Works and I don't think a local researcher would be able to help with this one.  I went to Nottm. University to ask if they knew of any organised move from Nottingham to B.A. but they couldn't help.  If ever you were to find anything out in this line, I would be very grateful.  Thanks so much for info.
