Westleigh Hall Cottages - Westleigh
« on: Sunday 23 July 06 18:12 BST (UK) »

My Grandmother Martha Ellen Flowers as a young girl lived with her family at WESTLEIGH HALL COTTAGES. WESTLEIGH. SUFFOLK.
Can anyone give me any information of these cottages, are they still standing, and has anyone a photo. I assume they were Farm Cattages attached to Westleigh Hall.
Any information of the cottages and the Hall would be most welcome.

Hi

Westley is to the west of Bury St Edmunds and Westley Hall is still there.

The village is really just a suburb of the town now.

In 1844 Walter Burrell occupied Westley Hall (you would need to check the apportionment book to see who actually owned it - I have a feeling that it may have belonged to the Marquis of Bristol at Ickworth).
The church there was St Thomas a Becket, but it was in ruins a couple of hundred years ago.  The 'new' church dedicated to St Mary was built in 1836 - the combined PRs are available at the SRO from 1565-1900 on just 7 fiche.

Best wishes, SM ...
