Scotland 1881 and earlier
« on: Monday 24 July 06 03:13 UTC (UK) »

Hi; I'm looking for two families in Scotland in the 1881 census or earlier.

One is the family of William Mackie, b. 1869 in or near Glasgow.  I know that he had two sisters, one of whom was named Margaret.  I believe, though I'm not certain, that his father's name may have been David.  It's also possible that the name might be listed as "Mackey", although I believe it was "Mackie" until the mid-1880s when he emigrated to the U.S.

The other family is that of Jean Crawford, b. 1875 in or near Falkirk.  She had five siblings: William, John, James, Nellie, and Margaret.  Her parents were William and Mary, both born about 1850.

If anyone with access to the census can help, I'd really appreciate it.  Thanks.

Hi Aiwendil,

Welcome to RootsChat.

I think we might need a bit more information to track down the correct William Mackie. There are a number of possible candidates.

What was William's profession - this may help decide.

I have found a William Mackie living with his brother David in Carriden, Linlithgow.  William was born in Falkirk.  David was an iron moulder.  Let me know if you would like the details.  No sign of any sisters though.

This might be Jean:

16 Glengowan, New Monkland, Lanark
GROS 651/2 ED 20 p6
William Crawford Head M 27 b Glasgow, Lanark Colour Maker
Mary Crawford wife 28 b Shotts, Lanark
Jeane Crawford daughter 6  b Slamannan, Stirling Scholar
Helen Crawford daughter   4 b Slamannan, Stirling
Helen Crawford neice 15 b Glasgow, Lanark Servant
James McGill Lodger U 21 b Ireland Labourer
Patrick Connolly Lodger U 28 Glasgow, Lanark Labourer

Not definite, but the best I could find.
