I have a marriage in Kirtling between Samuel Poulter and Susan/Susanna Pettit on the 3rd January 1802 and would like to find out :
1. Was Samuel a widower or a singleman 2. Who were the marriage witnesses
Thank you Mortieau

Hi Mortieau Have you tried looking at the Kirtling and Upend site. Might be worth a look as the Pettit's are mentioned on there. If I remember right the site is. www.kirtlingandupend.org.uk. Have been round the graveyards in that area, and there are a lot of Pettit's and Poulters buried there. Will be going over that way in a couple of weeks if you want me to look for anything let me know.

Hi Ricky, Probably I'm just being thick but I went to the KirtlingandUpend site but could'nt find any parish records.
My problem is both Samuel Poulter & Susan Pettitt on their marriage entry say ( I have been told) that they were both born in Cowlinge but living in Kirtling. More there is a possability that there were 2 Samuel Poulters born in 1777 in Cowlinge, there is a 1799 Samuel Poulter marriage ( to Frances Swan) in Cowlinge, so I am trying to find if the 1802 marriage was the same Samuel as a widower, or the 2nd Samuel as a singleman.
And as all my sources themselves have got the info 2nd or 3rd hand it's all a bit of a puzzle.
Best Mortieau

Hi mortieau Sorry I should have said there are no parish records but if you look in the guest book there is a mention of the Pettitt. My wife has Pettitt in her family from around that area, One of them if I remember right married a John Murkin from Lidgate. What I can make out from researching them is that most of them are all related in some form or another. As my wifes family come from Cowlinge and Lidgate and Kirtling Upend ,and surrounding area we spend a lot of time caring for her grandparents graves at Cowlinge. So if you want a lookup in the grave yards out that way just let me know. I think if I remember rightley the church at Kirtling is always locked and the vicar is no help as we have asked on a few occassions about the parish records , as the Cambridge archives say that from 1837 to the present time the church has them.

Hi Ricky, I think the 'main action' of my Poulter/Pettitt family is in Cowlinge, even though there was a Susan Pettitt bpt 10/10/1772 in Kintling d/o Peter & Alice for various reasons I do'nt think she's mine ( I could be wrong).
I just have not been able to get any info on the Pettitt family in Cowlinge in the 1760's-80's and have been told that the parish register for this period is so faded as to be impossible to read. If you have any record on a Susan Pettitt born there in the 1770's-early 80's I'd sure like to hear of it.
The only graves ( if they exist) in Cowlinge that I think might be there would be of the Poulter family: Thomas Poulter & wife Lydia who married in Cowlinge 1777 Frances Poulter ( wife of Samuel) who may have died 1799-1802 And Samuel himself who was buried 13/7/1829 Cowlinge
After 1836 my branch of the Poulters moved/married to Newmarket then to France.
Best John

Hi mortieau Was at cowlinge the other day, had a look round the graveyard but couldn't see any head stones with Poulter on them, but some are so old that the inscription's on them have worn off. Was going to do the Kirtling and Upend churchyards as there are two churches there, but it poured with rain, will have a look next time we go over which might be in a couple of weeks time.

Hi Ricky, Thanks for looking for me, but as the Poulters seemed to have left Cowlinge by the 1840's I did'nt expect to find much in terms of graves. Also I have been told the parish record in the 2nd half of the 18th century in Cowlinge are so faint ( I guess the parish clerk watered down the ink) as to be almost impossible to read, time for the old ultra violet lamp.
As to the Pettit part of my family it seems from the 1851 census that they did come from Upend, not Cowlinge as I previously thought, through I think Susan Pettit born in the 1770's ( I have the exact date, just can'nt find it for the minute) daughter of Peter Pettett and his wife Alice, now I have Alice's burial in Kirtling in 1803 I can find no burial (or birth for Peter, b. C 1740's he married Alice in 1770 Kirtling) I do have now the transcript of the Kirtling PR, he's not there and I wondered if you have come across him in your research?
Anyway thank you for your grave yard search for me. Best Mortieau

Hi Tempsford, Thanks for your reply, but I finally broke down and bought the micro fiche of the actual Cowlinge and transcription of the Kirtling PR , a year or so ago.
Q are you also following the Poulter or Pettitt families in Kirtling?
Best John

Hi John, My maternal 8x gt grandmother was Margaret Poulter she married William Tweed in 1719 at Gt Thurlow, Suffolk and they settled in Ashley cum Silverley and Chevely and its possible Margaret was baptised in Ashley in 1697. I also have the name Poulter on my paternal side but they were in Gt Shelford.
