Some time ago there was a discourse online about the Orchards and it was such a help to me, especially Deborah. Sure saved a lot of grief.
I have only one problem, I have a William Orchard bapt.21 Feb 1779 son of Robert and Elizabeth and a William Orchard bapt. 3 Mar 1779, son of John and Mary
eeek!, which one is my William ? What methods can I use to work it out ?
I was doing great up until the marriage and offspring production of William Orchard 1779 marriage to Hannah Trent.
Can anyone help ? How far have the Orchard researchers managed to get ?
Hopeful Roz

It isn't proof postive but they appear to have named their first two children Mary and John - although there are two baptism dates for Mary so maybe the other William married a Hannah too

Not sure if you were referring to me?
I haven't been looking at the Orchard family recently so I can't really help. I'm fishing as much as anything.
Are your Robert and John brothers? and the sons of William Orchard and Mary Gretton?
And are their wives Elizabeth and Mary sisters? and the daughters of William and Hannah Rawles?
If the above is true, then it does not greatly matter since William's 4 grandparents are the same whichever route you take!
But some thoughts: Robert dies in 1783 only 10 years after his marriage to Elizabeth. Elizabeth remarries (1786 to Joseph Lillington) and has several more children. If you find any links between your William and the Lillingtons then that implies he is more likely to be the son of Robert and Elizabeth?
You could look at the occupations of the various children/grandchildren to see if there is a pattern. (I think they are all labourers but there still may be differences between the cousins - especially given the early death of Robert). It is possible (albeit unlikely given their status) that a will might establish the correct William. What about gravestones? Vestry minute books? Poor law records given that some of the Orchards end up as paupers?
I agree that the names of the children might indicate possible links.
John and Mary have Elizabeth (name of aunts), Mary (name of mother and paternal grandmother), John (name of father), William (name of both grandfathers), Richard (name of maternal uncle), Hannah (name of maternal grandmother).
Robert and Elizabeth have John (name of paternal uncle), Robert (name of father), William (name of both grandfathers), Hannah (name of maternal grandmother).
I don't know the names of all of William and Hannah Trent's children but there appear to be Mary, John, Elizabeth, William, George. Are there any more? The only name that stands out is George which is also the name of one of the Lillingtons born in 1789. If there are other children, then you may find more overlap.
William marries at quite a young age. Maybe he didn't get on with his stepfather? His first child is born a few months after the marriage. Maybe there is some record because of that?

Just noticed this in Henry Rolls' diary (from the transcription by Natalia McKenzie) which may be of interest:
"2 men put in the stocks at East Lulworth on Easter Sunday Apirl 15th 1827. One was Robert Archet of Winfrith, the other Manuel of Knowle. They was to Dorchester for a month for fighting by the chapple."
I am assuming Archet is Henry's spelling for Orchard. He often spells his own name as Ralls so I think it's a good bet. regards Deborah

Hi Roz, The two William ORCHARDS of 1779 you write about are actually cousins. The parents of both are John ORCHARD & Mary RAWLES then you have Robert ORCHARD & Elizabeth RAWLES.
Two brothers married two sisters.
The brothers are two of seven children {that I know of} to William & Mary ORCHARD nee GRETTON. Robert & Elizabeth's William was baptised 21st Feb 1779 @ Winfrith. John & Mary's William was baptised 3rd March 1779 @ Winfrith.
Cheers Geoff
