Is anybody else having trouble with guest book spam? I have a person who for the last 2 or 3 days has posted at least 100 entries in my guest book. He uses a few different names (Ahmed, Nick, Ivan, Mamadshah) non English speaking perhaps? and has 2 different email addresses, yahoo so even if there are 6 there at once I have to delete them all separately as the IP is not the same.
He is not abusive ..... only says Hello nice site! leaves email address and URL (always the same-haven't opened it) I got up this morning to 6 of them and all day more have appeared 2 or 3 at a time. Is he likely to get sick of it and find someone else to harass? It has escalated today. I must have deleted 50 so far today and its only 3.30 PM yet. Its really driving me nuts. .....Kris

Oh Goodness Heather. Does that mean it will get worse? I hope someone has some good advice for us. The time it takes deleting each one, is so frustrating. I wondered about maybe spamming their email box back with DO NOT SPAM. I have had the odd spammer before with just a single post but nothing like this fellow. It used to be exciting to see a message 'someone signed your guestbook" but now I shudder every time it appears.....Kris

I would not email him back if I were you. That will only confirm a valid email adress that he knows he is getting through to a real person, and then will send it on to other spammers.

Thanks Sue,
I wouldn't have used my real email address, if that was the way to go. I too could set up a yahoo to spam him back from. He really is getting to me and it is always the same 2 addresses he uses. It is only the last couple of days so far! Just wondering how many I am likely to find when I can't get online for a day or two if he is going to persist, or is it likely to be as with junk mail, they give up after a while...ignore.....Kris

The nasty bludger! I feel for you Kris.
I had to change my email address about a year ago because of the ramped up SPAM I was receiving for, dodgy investment opportunites, marital aids and viagra.
Is your guest book attached to your website, may be you need to take off the guestbook link for a few weeks, or add the email address to contact you but do not make it "live" ie don't link it to an email program. The auto spam programs scan through websites and pick up live mail addresses and add them to their lists which perpetuate the problem. I bet it is not even a real person, doing the emailing, just randomly generated names.
Hope you manage to stop them Sue

Me too. It's a real pain. He's obviously targeting Rootschat.net sites.

If any of these spam emails use the word MUGU, then they are Nigerian scammers, and are targeting the guestbooks looking for valid/working emails addresses. DO NOT REPLY. Maybe if you have the option to hide email addresses, that might be helpful.
Me, I dont have any guestbook - which solves that problem.

Me too. It's a real pain. He's obviously targeting Rootschat.net sites No he's not, it's a general "guest book problem"
If these are the same ones I think they are, then it is not a 'person', but a spamming program.
There are several about. One was spamming ardguest guest books (the one RootsChat recommends). They even spammed the ardguest site guest book !!! The problem is not the messages but the fact they usually include URLs to dubious sites I have a fix for one of the ardguest spammers, and solved a second problem for one RootsChatter by simply dropping the URL from all guest book entries. (but you still have to delete the actual entry)
I would not email him back if I were you. That will only confirm a valid email adress that he knows he is getting through to a real person, and then will send it on to other spammers. I can only repeat this advice:
I would not email him back if I were you. That will only confirm a valid email adress that he knows he is getting through to a real person, and then will send it on to other spammers. Bob

OK thanks everybody, Have to admit I did get myself into trouble by unsubscibing to spam email before.
I too have the Ardguest one Trystan set up for me. It didn't enter my mind that this was not a real person. Guess I will see how it goes today. I hope it is OK to keep deleting them. I do not wish to put a genuine person who may find me off signing my guest book by seeing page after page of this. I had about 8 more after I started this thread last night and only one appeared while I was sleeping so much quieter than the rest of yesterday had been. Guess for now I just wait and see how many come through today....Kris

Hi Kris,
Yep I have had the same names on my guestbook - every 4/5 one has a list of linked adverts - the rest just say "nice site Ahmed" - I keep deleting them.
The all have different ISPs and email addresses - so I can't think of another way to stop them - will see what Falkyrn has come up with.
Cheers
Keith

I don't have a guest book on my website, but I was being hit by numerous spam emails via the 'contact form'....I assume from a rolling name/ address generator.
What I did in the end was to set up my emailing system via my website hoster so that every genuine contact email is delivered via a 'Root' address (nothing to do with Rootschat, though)....and because that is a 'Safe email address' they get through OK, but everything else goes to Junk.
Incidentally, I am finding evidence of a severe increase in the number of various 'organisations' releasing email addresses (eg TB and Yippee....I know it was them that did it)....I guess even our Supermarkets have done it.
Al.

Glad I'm not the only one. I've been deleting like mad! I then wondered if it wasn't just me. Bingo - we're all in the same soup.
I've taken my guestbook off-line for the moment (just changed the directory name for it) with a view to reinstating in a few days time in the hope that what looks like an automated programme will have given up.
Bob - I'll be in touch!
