It is really annoying.  I found a really nice web site the other day and was going to sign the guest book to congratulate them.  I found I couldn't as it was full of spam for loans and body part enlargememnts.

"Ahmed" has got a lot to answer for!! Angry Angry

Mine has started to try and pretend he is actually signing - saying "nice site" can't quite understand what they get out of it - now no I have taken off a place for them to list their websites.

Just keep deleting them - they will get fed up again in a few days when they see I delete their guestbook rubbish!

Just keep deleting them

If you get a lot at once, and you have a text-based guestbook (e.g. ardguest) it's easier to download the guestbook, delete all the offending entries in an editor, and then upload the edited guestbook. (see also reply #26 )

They won't because computers don't get bored. Its a script spamming the guestbook, not real people.

I'm going to be writing the docs for mine later today and will make an effort to contact trystan so he can see about distributing it.

Me too Keith Sad

Afraid I've temporarily disabled both my guest book and mail form as I was getting swamped. Instead I've asked them to find me on Rootschat until I can cope with it. Also badly need to update the site but life's too busy right now.

On a brighter note I had an amazing contact via mailform a couple of weeks ago which has pushed me through one particular brick wall, so it's not all bad!

I've suffered too.  But I've implemented a workaround with my ardguest guestbook - PM me if you  want to know what it is.  It worked a few months ago, and it looks like it is working again now.

I feel very sorry for you all suffering, I hardly get any messages in mine (good or bad) but I do think I had a bad one a couple of weeks ago. Just said "Nice Site" and gave a geocities website address. Suffice to say I just deleted it and (fingers crossed) nothing since. Not saying it too loud otherwise I may be next
I use smartgb.com which I have set so people have to copy characters before they can post their message.

The same has been happening lately with referal forms on my web site.  There are some programs out there that keep filling forms (guestbook submission is a form) and you need to put some type of password in the script to prevent programs from submitting.  It's very hard to stop.

Since my forms mostly generate emails, as well as checking the subject, I auto delete mail from certain addresses and block certain IP addresses, but it keeps on coming.   My guestbook too is virtually useless - people kep posting viagra ads etc...

Since we can't stop it, I've added a new "feature" to my ardguest guest book:

it rejects any entries with an http, an https or a www in the text !!
So meaningless entries will still get in, but the websites for sex and pharmaceuticals won't !

PM me for details.

Not quite sure what annoys me most - deleting all the Guest Book Spam or deleting GenesReunited Hot Matches!

There is a little program that is reputed to be able to stop spam.

Here is a little demo of how it works.

The spammers have worn me down, and I have abandoned my ardguest guest book and set up a new one as used and recommended by Dinie http://www.smartgb.com/?p=newbottomlink3.  This guestbook has a spam filter.

What's more the new one isn't on the free rootschat webspace, so the spammers aren't using my precious bandwidth when they attempt (I hope unsuccesfully) to spam in my space.  Cheesy

This all came about because I was unable to change the folder name for my guestbook - see http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,218644.0.html

I (and others off whom I had pinched the idea) had used the ploy of changing the folder name of, and resetting the links to, the guestbook, and it would take a month or two for the spammers to catch up with the new location.  Unfortunately it seems impossible now to change the folder name of the guestbook through the RootsChat webspace file manager.  Sad

I was getting 10 or more messages in the guestbook a day - mostly to do with certain drugs which claim to improve the sexual potency of ageing men (well they got that one right, didn't they  Shocked) and also about other things which I could only hazard a guess about (but I had my suspicions  Roll Eyes).

I have saved off the old guest book, and transcribed the entries onto a page on my site.  There were almost 40 (legitimate or apparently legitimate) entries which wasn't particularly arduous, and I don't know why I hadn't done it before, as it only took me about a couple of hours all told  - the equivalent of about two to three weeks worth of deleting spam on the old guestbook.  And I can now consider going on holiday now without worrying about all the spam accumulating.  Smiley

So fingers crossed that Dinie's recommendation works.
