"British Subject"
« on: Thursday 27 July 06 17:59 UTC (UK) »

Hi can anyone tell me whether a person had to have been naturalised in order to write "British Subject" on a census return? My ancestor, 'Henry' Luders was born in Germany and by the 1891 census, he puts "British Subject" after born in Germany. He married an English woman, but that was in the 1860's so...Basically I was wondering if it was likely that there were any naturalisation papers for him etc. Thanks, Jo

Have a look on www.nationalarchives.gov.uk and where it says 'search', key in 'naturalization records'.  Follow the links. You may find him there. Good luck

Thanks, I've had a look on the Access to Archives part of the NRO site and I can't find him there, but I don't know if all naturalisations are listed. Does anyone know?

Sometimes people said 'British Subject' although they hadn't been naturalized, not many though I think.  I think some records aren't indexed on the catalogue, but the vast majority are; there are often a lot of discrepencies in how the names are spelt, though.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=242
- this is the leaflet covering Naturalisation records, what there is, etc.

Is this him, or a relative possibly?

HO 144/306/B5264
Nationality and Naturalisation: Luder, Henry Robert Charles, from Prussia. Resident in Liverpool. Certificate A6152 issued 7 June 1889.

Timing would be right if the first census he claims citizenship on is 1891.

Thanks, the timimng would be right, but as far as I know, he never lived in Liverpool. He is in Huntingdonshire in the 1871 census, then Hertfordshire until he died just after the 1891 census (luckily for me!). I'm pretty much giving up on this line for now though! I can't afford the plane fare to germany! Thanks, Jo

I know how you feel..........I have a samuel Raphael on 1851 says born germany british subject but like you I cant find any naturlisation records and no way to find where fromin Germany
same goes for his wife Sarah Franc/ks  seems like their marriage here in 1833 is going to have to be my brickwall.

good luck  sandie

Hi,
It took me ages to find my g grandfathers naturalization,I spent hours trawling through well worth it in the end.
On census it usually says naturalized British subject.
