Alice Ridley mystery/brickwall
« on: Friday 28 July 06 12:21 BST (UK) »

My great great grandmother Hannah Ridley allegedly had an older sister called Alice. Alice appears with the family on the 1841 census, which indicates that her birth would have been around 1827. There is no entry on the LDS site for the birth/baptism of Alice, daughter of William Ridley and Ann Hudson, although the rest of the siblings (all 9 of them) are listed. As far as I can find out the family always lived in Coundon.

I am sure that there was an Alice Ridley in the family as there is an entry in my great aunt's diaries which talks about Alice having emigrated to the US. However, I have found that this diary is sometimes inaccurate (brothers turn out to be nephews etc).

There is an Alice Ridley on the LDS site, who was born in Coundon at about the right time, but it lists her parents as Robert Ridley and Anna Collingwood. That Alice Ridley did end up in the US, but not in the area that I expected to find "my" Alice Ridley. Also, the Alice on the LDS site doesn't name her children as I would have expected, if she was the child of William Ridley and Ann Hudson.

However, to complicate matters further......my great aunt's diary makes reference to our relatives, the Collingwoods.

Alice could have been a cousin living with them, but of course, the 1841 census doesn't help in this respect and she isn't with the family in 1851.

Can anyone give me any tips on how to sort this one out?

Hello Wotty,

One thing that might help is to find the death certificate for the Alice Ridley who did end up in the US (assuming you know the state and her surname at death).  Each state had its own arrangements as to BMD record-keeping, but so far all the death certificates I've got for American rellies (South Dakota, Massachusetts and West Virginia) have named the deceased person's parents.
