Hi everyone, I am researching the paternal side of my tree. My gt gt granpa was John McLennan born abt 1833-7 in Inverness. His father's name was John, he was a farmer. John Jr, came south to Liverpool, and married a lady called Eliza Whittaker from Ireland. They married in 1869 and went on to have 9 children, that I know of. Any information that you can give me would be gratefully recieved. Thanks, Red

Hi Red
The only one that I can find with the specification you state was born in Kiltarlity, Invernessshire.
Born 29 Aug 1837 Bpt 31 Aug 1837
Parents - John McLennan and Margaret Macdonald
IGI Batch no C0111014
Kiltarlity is to the west of Inverness itself and is in rich faming country.

Harris is in the Western Isles. He might have moved but I think the Kiltarlity area - close to Inverness is more likely for farming folk.

Hi Gadget,
thank you. I didn't realise Harris was so far, I thought it was in Inverness. But your info, now sounds the most promising. I shall go with that. I will keep you posted if I find anything.
Thanks,
Red

I can see the mountains of Harris out to the south west from where I live on a clear day but it takes about 3 hrs by Ferry to Stornoway and then a 1-2 hr drive down through Lewis to get to Harris (which is the southern bit of Lewis). Lewis itself is fairly flat.
On the other hand, it takes me about 1 3/4 - 2 hrs to get to Inverness on the east coast
These are by today's transport!

Have you tried searching for the family on the 1841 Census on FreeCen - it would be worth a look?

Hi Gadget,
see what you mean about the distance and traveling to Harris !!
Yes, I have tried the scottish 1841 census. It gives a few John McLennans, but the only one with John as the father is the one from Harris. It looks like you may be right with the one from Kiltarlity.
Thanks,
Red

I've just been looking in Kiltarlity and find most of them are McLeans - no McLennans - nearest a McKinnon. Could the family have moved away by then?
From my local history reading, I know that there were regular famines and, of course, the Clearances.
Not sure what else to suggest.

Hi Gadget,
ooooooo, it's so frustrating! Not sure whether they had moved, but it is pssible. If it is, as you suggest, that they moved because of the famines and clearances, could he be on his own?
I have found a John Mclennan on his own, living with the McBean family, in Kilmallie. On the 1841 census. Again, I apologise for the lack of my geography!
Or as a long shot it could be the other family in Harris !!!
Thanks for the time you have spent looking for me,
Regards,
Red

Hi Red
If he was born in the time period that you suggest, I think he might have been too young to be away from the family. It is possible that he could have been with other relatives though, for one reason or another.
I've just re-read your first message. I see that you have him in 1869 and, I assume, from then onwards. Have you got him in the 1861 and 1851 censuses. Where was he then? It is better to get information from them than go straight to the 1841.

Hi Gadget,
in 1869 John married Eliza Whittaker, from Ireland, in a Presbyterian church in Liverpool, I have the cert.
I have them both with their children on 1881, 1891 and 1901 census. They where in Liverpool then. Although married in Liverpool, I can't find them on the 1871 census. But, have found wrong spellings of the surname on 1881 and 1901 census. It could be the reason I havn't found them yet on the 1871 census yet.
He was a labourer on the wedding cert, but on the censuses he was a smiths strike.
They had 9 children that I know of, all in Liverpool, so I don't think he came back to Scotland.
I have searched the 1861, 1851 and 1841 Scottish census with no luck on any of them !!
Thanks again,
Red

I presume that it just says 'born Scotland' on the English censuses
You don't make it clear whether you have checked the 1861 and 1851 English Censuses. it would be worthwhile, just in case he came south with his parents at an early age.
Many of my Scottish ancestors moved South or emigrated during the 1830s and 1840s.

Hi Gadget,
it does actually say 'Inverness, Scotland' on the 1891 census.
I will now check English census for them. But, having difficulty with the change of spelling all the time !!
