I'm trying to find more details re George Hammond born Stockport 1837 and his marriage to Martha Charlton (I think this was her married name (but maybe not) as he has a step-daughter on the 1871 census aged 16). The earlier census details may give me more clues.
Hi Gill I have just had another look at the 1871 that I did for you, and I now think that what was maybe a transciption error Bowden not Bosden is in fact correct, there is a small village called Bosden in the Hazel Grove area. There is a marriage for George and Martha on the website below
HAMMOND George CHORLTON Martha Heaton Norris, St Thomas Stockport ST7/6/290
on the 1851 census there are two possibles for George and family
HO107-2156-11 born Hazel Grove c1835 father George
HO107-2156-125 born Cheadle c1840 living with grandparents
It may be an idea in order to accertain the right one to purchace the marriage certificate and find fathers name, then get back to us and we will take it further back.
The Stockport register office are very efficient and the marriage certificate arrived today. It gives father of George to be John Peers a farmer, it also gives Martha's age as 21 but I think this should be 27 as that ties in with later data she was a spinster. George being illegitamate ties in with a family bible entry which shows a George born 2/3/36 to Mary Hammond (no mention of her marrying or a father). I think what I need now is George's birth details - please point me in the right direction to get this.
Hi The birth of George was before compulsary cival registration, therefore I looked on the IGI website and there is an entry for George Hammond bapised 8 May 1836 at St.Mary Cheadle Stockport mother Mary Hammond no fathers name.
you could find an entry in the parish records at Chester records office, although it may not tell you any more than this. I have looked again at the census records but have not as yet found a George of the correct age with the right family, but will continue searching.
