Does anyone have a copy of "The Surnames of Scotland. Their Origin, Meaning and History" by George F Black, published New York 1962? I would like to know what source he means when he refers to "Will" as in "Alexander Pattillo was a member of the Huntly Volunteers in 1798 (Will, p.7)"
Any help gratefully received!

Thanks for the reply, Alison. I'm looking to see what the source was for the information in my posting about Alexander Pattillo. I would like to find out if there were any other family members in the Huntly Volunteers of 1798. In Black's book, the reference is just to "Will. p7", which could refer to a Will or to a publication by someone called Williams, for example.
Have you got the book?

Hello Argee,
The reference 'Will, p7' relates to the surname 'Will', which is a diminutive of William, which then leads you to a reference book written by William Will of Huntly in 1914. It is called - 'The Huntly Volunteers. A history of the volunteer movement in Strathbogie from 1798-1808.'
I got this from the 1984 edition of Black's book in my local library.
The area known as Strathbogie, or Strath Bogie, is in the valley of the Bogie Water (the River Bogie to us modern folks) which extends from Rhynie village northwards to Huntly town.
Regards John
