Taylor/Barklay marriage Darlington ?
« on: Monday 31 July 06 18:18 BST (UK) »

I am looking for the marriage of Ellen TAYLOR to Robert BARKLAY around or after 1861.

They are not marrieed and both are living seperately in Darlington in the 1861 census. Ellen is from Barnard Castle originally and Robert is from Ireland. They started having children early in 1862 and they all had the name BARKLAY. By 1871 they were listed as both being BARKLAY on the census for Darlington.

I cannot find the marriage on Free BMD or Darlingotn registration office records.

Any help is much appreciated as I am running out of ideas.

Hi Steven,

I am quite worried about myself right now.  Roll Eyes
Not only can I not find the marriage for the Barklay's,
I can't find the census results for 1861 and 1871 in
Darlington either?

Is this just me having a 'moment' or has anyone else
looked?

Will you please put me out of my misery and tell me
where they are?

Cheers,

Pels

In 1861 Robert was lodging in the Dolphin Inn in the town centre and Ellen was living just outside Aycliffe Village at How Hills. Robert was listed as Bartley, presumably a problem with his accent !

In 1871 they were liviing in Darlington again listed as Bartley and residing in Park Street in the Parish of St Johns.

Any help or ideas for the marriage would be great. Robert  I assume was Catholic and I am not sure what implications that might have.

Thanks

The fact that Robert might have been Roman Catholic would have no bearing on the Civil Registration of the marriage - it ought to show up on the GRO lists.
However at the moment I can't seem to find anything that remotely resembles it.  Has anyone else had any luck  Huh  Huh

Hi,

Just trying to go through this using all the name
variations:

1841 census, Gainford, Barnard Castle:

Eleanor Taylor, age 1, living with parents James and Margaret

1851 census, Barnard Castle, reg. dist. Teesdale

Ellen Taylor, age 11, living with parents James and Margaret

Ellen Taylor, b. Mar. qtr. 1840 reg. dist.: Teesdale

Deaths:

Darlington Sept. qtr. 1886
Robert Barkley, age 49

Darlington, Jun. qtr. 1889
Ellen Barkley, age 49

To answer your query Jennifer, nothing at all?  Smiley

Still looking though and just thinking aloud!!

I see Robert, son, age 8 on 1871 census was born in
Newcastle.

I'll keep looking!

Hello,

If this is Robert Bartley, son of Robert and Ellen (1871 census):

Robert Berkley, b. Mar. qtr. 1862 Newcastle upon Tyne

The names we now have are:

Barklay
Barkley
Bartley
Berkley
Eleanor/Ellen

The only name consistant in all this is Robert!

Hi Jane,

Where else have looked? To save me going over old ground!

I've tried North Yorks (Gainford connection)
Durham and Northumberland because of young
Robert's birth?
Just as well the weather isn't good - I should be gardening!

Hi Pels

Are we all going around in circles, haven't even hovered yet Grin, and is raining here in Redcar so no gardening for me lol

Well I have looked on freebmd for Newcastle, Teesdale, Barnard Castle, and then I thought maybe they skipped over the borders and came into Middlesbrough area, nothing Huh  I will check middlesbrough indexes once more,  On ancestry I have tried every spelling I can think of, and her name is quite easy - Taylor, I can't find any at all, maybe and just a theory her parents didn't approve as he was Irish Huh so maybe they just took off and lived 'tally'.

Will keep looking, makes a change from my brickwalls and being a pain to the postie while i wait for certs Grin

There is always one who has to ask the obvious silly
question, so here goes:

Steven - How do you know we should be looking for
Robert Barklay?

There appears to be so many variations of his name
throughout the years, do you have a certificate which
states this is how to spell it?

I feel ashamed to query this - but nothing lost, nothing
gained  Embarrassed Embarrassed

Are you sure all of the children belong to Robert and Ellen together.

On 1881 there is a bit of a gap between Margaret age 12 and Elizabeth age 7.

Is there a chance either (or both) of them could have been married before (between 1861 and 1871) which could impact on the date (and in Ellen's case surname) for the Robert/Ellen marriage.

I can't access the 1871 details which may show other children in the gap, so this may be utter nonsense but just a thought.
