Surname mystery - HURSE
« on: Wednesday 02 August 06 07:41 BST (UK) »

I've ancestors who had the surname Hurse and varoius derivatives of the name.

Has anyone any knowlege of this surname as it's proving quite hard to track.

It has been suggested that it was once Harris and because of broad accents etc was eventually written down as Hurse.

They seem to have lived around Bedminster c early 1840's.

Any suggestions welcomed

Gill

Hi Gill,

Just found your post in a search.  Sorry I haven't seen it before.  I am also researching the Hurse name.  My branch (in Somerset too) changed to Hurst c1900 but I know of some distant cousins in the same town who are still Hurse.  Unfortunately have no idea either where the name is from but would love to find out.

The furthest back I have got is Joseph Hurse born c1795.  He married Hannah Atwell (from Somerset)in Bristol and in 1841 they were living in Newport, South Wales.  He died in Pill (Bedminster District) in 1849.  I was about to post asking for help with him in the Common Room, but thought I would first check my previous posts on the subject and found yours.  If you are interested in sharing any further information please let me know.
