My family of Jennings has vanished !!??
« on: Sunday 31 October 04 01:06 BST (UK) »

My g-g-g-grandfathers brother was Samuel Jennings born in Docking Aug 1797 he married Susanna Creake 19 Nov 1824 in Sedgeford, Norfolk.
They had the following children all born in Sedgeford according to census

James Jennings <1826> Baker in 1851
Samuel Jennings<1829> Blacksmith in 1861
Hannah Jennings<1832>
John Jennings     <1834>
Eliza Jennings      <1836>
David Jenning       <1839>

I have the family in 1841 and then again in 1851 but David is missing and I presume he died as an infant.
I have just looked for them in the 1861 census and they have vanished.
(They were living in Sedgeford for the 1841 and 1851 census).
So I tried all the neighbouring towns and villages and tried them twice but not a whiff of them.

So I tried to find them on the 1881 census but still nothing. So I tried the IGI on the Lds site and it had nothing on them except for someone submitting them on the site and it gave me a death date of 3 Dec 1876 for Susanna so I tried the freebmd and I found nothing to vouch for it.

They could have emigrated but Sam and Susannah were getting on a bit to emigrate. Any ideas on what to do next would be greatfully appreciated.

Hi
Looking at later census returns some of the Jennings born Docking Norfolk turn up in Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, have you checked the 1871 census for Lincolnshire, maybe they moved on? Its just a thought!
I tried Ancestry for 1871 census but Lincs isn't listed yet (it says coming soon! How soon is soon?)

Yea I have tried lincoln but I did only concentrate on the jennings there as they are my family. Its just that I can't seem to find any of the children in the 1881 or the 1901 they all seem to have vanished. Shame the lincoln census isn't on line just yet. I'll have to check that out just incase. Thanks for your help I need some!!?? Anjo

Hi
There is a John in Docking on the 1891 census aged 55 which would give a birthdate of 1836 (pretty close to your John (b 1834) )have you had a good nose at the 1891 census, I live not too far from Docking, next time I'm at my local library I'll see what they have on Docking and Sedgeford, see what the local returns turn up, if you'd like?

Anne that would be wonderful. Where was this John born the one you mentioned as with most families names repeat and it could be him or one of his cousins.
I only got the 1891 census returns for the main Jennings of my family (All born in Docking) when I had access to ancestry.com on the free access.
If you could find anything out about them I would be most grateful it is good Of you to give up your time and take the trouble to do this for me. It is so fustrating not being able to visit England just yet to further my research so I really appreciate your help. Thanks Anjo

Hi
I will see what I can do locally, but it won't be very quickly as I only get to the library when I have spare time, but if you can bear with me I will do some nosing for you.
In 1891 there are 4 families of Jennings in Docking.

Try it

Hi
Glad you got in, and I don't blame you for staying in til you've finished, you never know when it closes up.
I've found that when you come out of it, when you go back it doesn't ask for the password it just says proceed.
Lets hope it lasts a while

I still can't solve the mystery.
I found a death for David Jennings 1844
I also found a death for Samuel Jennings Dec qtr 1852
and for a John Jennings Dec qtr 1852 (Both Docking Dist) May be there was some illness, family distaster or aliens I just don't know I will just have to keep digging.
I can't find anything on James or possibly marriages of the girls.
This part of my tree wasn't too important to me but now it has my interest I just want to find out more.
Is there anyone out there who can enlighten me??

Hi Anjo
Just a thought, there are Jennings in Heacham, Norfolk today. It may be possible that they are relatives.
