Billiejo Thanks for the reply, I realised I'd spelt the name wrong Many thanks for the web address. I hadn't reckoned on Peat being such a vast and varied industry, really interesting. The Peat workings ( is that the right word ?) I am interested in was called Ballydermot in Rathangan Thanks again Kind Regards, Dave

Correct. However we use still refer to it as the 'BOG'
Could be the 'Bog of Allen', around the area you are enquiring about...but I could be wrong... 2nd thoughts why not google that and see. Good luck

I'm afraid I cant give any opinion re-Ballydermot which I've never heard of. Do know of a Ballyfermot which is in Dublin and Castledermot in Kildare.

Hi Dave. Yes you are right Ballydermot is the right name. I have some great memories of serving an engineering apprenticeship there starting in Sep 1977. At the height of it's time there were more than 300 men employed there during the 60/70. They came from all corners of Ireland and were housed in camps in Killenthomas and The Derries just outside Edenderry. I managed to go back there in 2005 and the workforce is now down to less than 100 men. If you would like to see some of the pics i took when i was there in 2005 then please contact me at (*) There was one man called Johnny Fitzgerald when i was there but it's a big name around the Rathangan area so a look at there site(Rathangan) might be of some help. Best wishes. Joe Cummins.

Joe Thanks for your reply My wife and I managed to go over to Rathangan a few months back, to visit her sister. My brother in law drove me over to the bog and I only saw one old chap stacking the turf. he said he had worked there since 1962 but unfortunately his memory was'nt what it used to be and he could remember faces but not names.
The Fitzgerald's I am after were born and lived in Rathangan and worked on the bog in the late 50's early 60's
I would love to see your photo's. I will send you a personal message with my email address.
Thankyou for your interest Regards, Dave

Hiya Dave, How are you progressing with the search for your wife's relatives
Click here to read a little of the history of Bord na Mona. Believe it or not the short article is on Steve Johnson's Railway Pages website

Hi Christopher,
Thanks for the link. Very interesting
I am not doing very well with trying to find anything later than 1900. I know that applies to everyone, what with the lost records.
Also one of the oldest residents in Rathangan has just passed away and I was told that she knew everything about everybody and that she would have helped me. How come nobody mentions facts like this when the person is alive
I have a few of my wife's relations back to 1851,
Anyway, I will just have to keep looking
Thanks for your interest Regards, Dave
