Keith/Sheila
It had also occurred to me about the 1841 being around the time of Elizabeth's illness beginning - in addition it is worth noting that Joseph was born in 1840 which may have been the cause of her breakdown.
Haven't seen the Kent thread - will pop over there now.

Jan and Sheila,
You're both putting a lot of time and thought and energy into this thread...
Doddington would make a better fit, and could possibly be Elizabeth CARTER's more specific birthplace than Maidstone.
This enquiry (and the one I started up in Kent) has unearthed all kinds of fascinating new areas, especially about the whole private asylum thing for those who could afford the fees in Victorian times.

Just doing a bit more 1841 searching - tracking young Joseph. Found this family, Joseph is not with them in 1851 - of course he may have died but it is worth holding them on file perhaps Henry is Robert's brother.

Thanks so much for that - sorry I haven't acknowledged this, as I've just got back from some very successful ancestor hunting in deepest Derbyshire...

Jan,
This is quite an amazing spot in the 1841 Census.  Lots of good people on here had been gnashing their teeth looking for this family then, but there's definitely a Robert CARTER marrying a Lydia somewhere on the IGI, connected to this family, and I'm pretty sure this is the right family.  The man in The Guildhall Library said that Tower Hamlets was really close to Portsoken Ward, and I'm very excited by all this.
Those "Watch" books I've mentioned on here yesterday - possibly on a new thread I started on The Common Room - mentioned a Robert CARTER and a Robert CARTER junior up to at least 1840, so this would seem to say that the Robert CARTER (the elder) was still alive and active in his 70's in The Minories, and was probably the one in the family who was signing his name there from 1817 thru to 1840.
Wow! Somehow the grandchildren are there with their grandparents, and their parents are at Sussex Place, Marylebone.  I wonder whether wife Elizabeth was already beginning to struggle with her (mental) health in 1841, and her youngest children were therefore in the care of the grandparents...
I notice too that as Joseph's age is given as 2 years old, then that would point even more to an 1839 birth year.
Seem to be talking to you simultaneously on two different threads about the same ideas, but I'm really excited about the implications here.
Thank you so much,

Janan,
Thinking further about this, could I trouble you for the household showing the 9-year Elizabeth CARTER in Marylebone in 1841.  I may well have enough to be able to connect her too to this family...
Very best wishes,

That's a great find Jan.  Well done.

After re-reading this thread I notice that Robert Carter died in 1870 aged 83 years, which would make him born c 1787/8.

On IGI there is a birth for a Robert Carter (no date given) and a christening 9 October 1788 at Rosemary Lane, Aldgate.  The parents are Robert Carter and Lydia.  May be worth further investigation.

There are lots more Carters on there.

Hope I'm not getting carried away here but on Pallots there is:

In 1786 Robert Carter Jnr - Lydia Tidmarsh, St Botolph Without Aldgate

It looks like Jnr maybe someone could clarify.

Anyway here is the possible for Elizabeth junior - I'm afraid the image is very faded so I'm struggling a bit.

Well!
Take it away ladies...Seem to remember you earlier on here, Sheila, trying to find that/those elusive 1841Census CARTER entries in the London area.
This is all wonderful news, brick walls suddenly tumbling to the ground.  The JOHNSON connection is very interesting as the CARTER's (through Elizabeth CARTER) married into the JOHNSON family of Cambridge in the 1860's.  They were also into the clothing business, so there may well have been a long family association through the years.
That 1786 marriage looks the business, and the references to Rosemary Lane (now sadly seemingly disappeared) appear to be entirely right.
Strange how things suddenly get revved up on here after long lulls...
