Depends on the date range you are looking at.  You can browse images of the GRO index (1837 to 1975) free of charge at Ancestry.co.uk.

You have to make sure you choose the full version on ancestry as they also have a copy of FreeBMD.  Sometimes their transcribing is a bit wayward but if the page you want does not come up then look for another name close in the alphabet and you can use arrows to go forward or backwards through the pages.  They have scanned the pages in so you see them just as you would if you went up to London to look at the books.   Very useful.
