I am researching for information relating to Isabella Smith. Isabella was born 1853 +/- one year in, i think, Locherbie, Dumfrieshire.
She was the second wife of Samuel Kelly Crosbie. She died Liverpool, 3 July 1853, aged 82 years.
i would really like to establish if Isabella was born in Locherbie, and if possible other family names, father, mother etc.

Hi there,
No probs  So she died in 1935 (or similar then)? I assume that you already have death info confirmed and you are using that to determine possible year of birth?
The IGI shows an Isobella Smith born in Dryfesdale parish (which I think is the correct parish for Lockerbie) to parents William Smith and Jane Kirk. However, there are a number of other Isabella Smiths born around the same time in Dumfries-shire. Can I ask, what source do you currently have that points to Lockerbie as her place of birth?

yes, you are correct in assuming the date of death was taken from the grave stone.
information re. isabellas birth place, is from my grandmothers day book entry. 'isabella smith, born lockerbie'.
the early family do appear to have been born in dumfriesshire and generally married into families from that area.

Hi Purlin,
When did Isabella Smith marry Samuel Kelly Crosbie? Was this in Scotland or England? It might be worth trying to find her on one of the census records - preferably after her marriage.

hi clare,
samuel and isabella married in liverpool, the date i have is 11th. april 1889.
all records i have seen regarding isabella, simply state, born scotland.
i suppose i will have to apply for a marriage certificate and hope that it lists the parents and place of birth. i had hoped to avoid that expense, it must be the scots in me!

Hi there,
If Samuel and Isabella married when she was around 36 (rough calculation!), did they have any children from that marriage? If so, their names may help as they may have been named after her parents, which could potentially help narrow things down a little.
If you can be pretty sure about her birth in Lockerbie (i.e. your grandmother's book has 'proven' to be accurate in the past), then there is definitely only one Isabella Smith born in Dryfesdale parish between 1851 and 1854 (inclusive), which is the one I have already mentioned.

yes, you have to be correct. children from samuel kelly's second marriage to isabella smith are samuel WILLIAM crosbie and isabella JANE.
