1674 Suffolk Hearth Tax Return
« on: Sunday 06 August 06 17:15 BST (UK) »

The Hearth Tax was introduced as a means of raising revenue for the Exchequer.  Householders were required to pay two shillings for each fire-hearth, one shilling at Michaelmas and one at Ladyday. Only those whose house was worth more than 20 shillings a year and who paid church and poor rates were liable for hearth tax.

Exemption certificates were issued to those too poor to qualify, which were then recorded on the return. Therefore the return lists all heads of household in the county in the year 1674.
