Could she be a prostitute?

Hi,

I noticed the 'Prostitution' Topic and just thought i'd hear your ideas on this.

My GG Grandmother had 5 children - she never married (Family rumours say that the father was rich man who would come and go to her house.

She was a straw Hat Sewer in Luton, in a house with five kids (The only earning household member!)
They could.t really hae survived on that single wage could they?

Maybe she had 'Another' job? or maybe as family rumours go, a rich man did come and go to the house???

Like to hear your thoughts

Families often tended to keep this type of thing "hushed up" in later generations but as there was a rumour in your family, personally speaking I would tend to go along with that ................. the "kept woman" theory Smiley

Would you know any possible way of finding out who the rich man could have been?

I suppose the childrens birth certificates is an obvious idea.

Yes I suppose they might yield something though not necessarily so Undecided

I would try baptism registers ..................... the clergy often knew the "ins and outs" of their parishioners and occasionally divulged such snippets in the parish registers.

It's always worth checking that they weren't admitted to the workhouse on occasion too - even if just to substantiate the theory that she was a kept woman.

Bastardy bonds with the parish chest records are another avenue which may be worth exploring ................ dependant on the date/place and survival of the relevant records.

It's probably a bit late for bastardy bonds but I would definitely check out possible baptisms.  There's a useful list here though how useful some of them will be will depend upon the date(s) http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,144380.msg654606.html#msg654606
