Mystery! ~ Minnie Beatrice MADELL
« on: Monday 07 August 06 11:43 BST (UK) »

Hi All,

Here's a tester.

I have a newspaper cutting [no idea which paper or date] announcing the Death of Mrs. Minnie Beatrice Madell:

"MADELL - On the 25th inst., at The Old Parr's Head, Upper Street Islington, Mrs. Minnie Beatrice Madell (Late Mrs. James), in her 38th year.  Interment Monday, October 1, at 12 o'clock, City of London Cemetry, Ilford."

The late Mr. James referred to is possibly Edward James James who was landlord of the Old Parr's Head 66, Cross Street, Islington in the 1901 census.  Minnie was not resident at that time.

I can find no record of Birth, Marriage or Death for Minnie, nor can I find her in the 1901 census.  A few of questions:

Is there a method to work out a year, knowing that October 1st was a monday?
Would the cemetary have a record of the interment & what details would that provide?
Is Minnie a diminutive for another name?

Kind regards,

Adrian.

I've just looked on the excellent http://pubsinlondon.net/index.html and I see that there are 2 Old Parr's Heads listed; one on Cross Street & one on Upper Street.  streetmap.co.uk shows that these streets form a junction.  Is it possible that the pub stands on the corner of the 2 streets and had different addresses at different times?

Here's a link to the City of London cemetery site.

http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/our_services/health_safety/cemetery_crematorium/burial_registers.htm

It gives some information about searching the registers

Hi Adrian,

As far as I know Minnie is a given name;  I have several in my tree.

Sorry no help on cemeteries!

Hi Adrian,

Looks like Minnie B Madell's death is registered in July quarter 1923: Islington 1b 269. Age is 38 and Oct 1 was on a Monday in that year.

Good luck with it,
Rob

Wow!  Thank you all so much for taking the time to look into this.  My mother-in-law will be delighted as another piece of her family jig-saw clicks into place.

Kind regards,

Adrian.

Hi Adrian,
It's from the full England and Wales death index, available on www.ancestry.co.uk and free to use for non-subscribers, I believe. Details are as above, but I should have said "September" quarter rather than "July" (It's July to Sept).
