Just noticed that a certain Julian has popped in to my site at 22.26 this evening and had a little wander around
Haven't put the Google analytics up yet Julian - busy doing paper work today and not feeling too well
What I've also noticed is an upsurge in hits since I put my website address at the bottom of my postings rather than just relying on the globe below my avatar.

Then in that case I think I will add mine and see if it makes a difference as well.

Can I just ask a quick question that has been puzzling me!
On the stats it occasionally brings up people who are returning visitors. Is this people who have bookmarked my site??

Hi Kerry
I think they (statscounter) put a cookie on anyone who has visted. iI this isn't cleared it is used to count if the person has returned.
I've had my first Yahoo searchers over the last few days so it must take a few weeks for the biggies to get their act together.

Hi Gadget
I was wondering today, because I've had a few returning visitors and couldn't find an explanation for it.
I can't remember having signed up with Yahoo but I must have done because I get a few from them occasionally.
As you say the biggies do take a while!

All search engines have search-bots (search robots) which trawl the web and index pages.
So even if you don't "sign up" with anybody (and I haven't), before long, all the search engines will find your site.
Despite not signing up with any search services, and generally not saying much about my site, I now have hits from text and image searches from google, yahoo, msn and a couple of others.
I also have some hits to specific pages, so I guess those have been bookmarked on previous visits. I also get the occaisional visitor from the links on Julianb's site (Thanks Julian )
I think the "returned" visitor is someone who returns to your site within a certain time, otherwise they are "new" again.

Thanks Bob
So it sounds like I could have saved the £70 a year I pay for my partner's commercial site to be signed up to hundreds of search engines then!!!! And all those key words I come up with!

While Bob's on duty
When Statcounter puts a block in the browser - does this mean every browser on the PC or just the one that is in use at the time - e.g I blocked in FF on both machines - what about IE, etc. Do I have to go in on each browser and load a blocking cookie?

How many hits did you make Kerry - now subtract immediately - did you test in IE? So we'll have to go in on each browser then.

First of all, StatCounter sets a blocking cookie an the computer where you are working. So if you use a different computer, you have to block on that one too.
Second: if you use different browsers, then each will have it's own way of storing cookies, so a cookie in IE won't be seen by Firefox, etc.
Previews: if by this you mean local testing, then you've had it, as far as blocking cookies go
I noticed this problem as well: the cookie blocks your hits to your website, not to your hard disk !
so my tracking list then looks like this:
7th September 2006 19:16:15 /M:/b1/maem1877.php No referring link 7th September 2006 19:17:44 /M:/b1/maem1877.php No referring link 7th September 2006 19:50:03 /M:/fam-mar-moritz.php No referring link 7th September 2006 21:25:12 boco.rootschat.net/i-pages.php#commercial boco.rootschat.net/ 7th September 2006 22:15:48 /M:/fam-margulies.php No referring link (m: is a pseudo disk drive that I set up using subst for easier access to my local files, \Margulies_Miscellania)
I solve this one by having two browser open if I am also working on my website (i.e. as of right now !!) One browser is online (this one, so I can reply here) and the other is offline for testing my website work.
Or if I can't be bothered, I open a new tab in firefox for testing, but go off-line (Files, Work offline) before loading the webpage.

I don't think I'm that worried so long as I can distinguish myself I can as Gadget said take those figures off. Bit puzzling though!!!!!
Oh the joys of being obsessed with hits to our websites

Thanks for that Bob. I think I've got to subtract 19 hits
I'm not sure how useful all these details are really. If you're marketing then it's important but these are only our stories and trees
I've got two lengthy stayers though - one of 7 hrs + and one of 5 hrs + . I know who the 7 hr one was but the 5 hr one
Anyone know of Energis as an ISP? The info I have says it was on the brink of being taken over but that was in 2004

My problem is I am conditioned at work. Every project we run has to justify themselves to their funders so I spend every month doing web hits on downloads and pages for them all.
I've got into the habit now!!!!

Energis - one of the energy companies perhaps
