by My Daughter. Chatting to find her Roots !
|
Not so much "sales and marketing" research, but as I often change things on my site, I find it interesting to see what the search machines are looking for and if it's still there. i.e. dead links !!
see Topic: Design tips: You have 8 seconds, starting from now ..... http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,167676.msg794226.html#msg794226
I've just had a thought about missing images. There are a couple of people who constantly find the site with a reference to an image, that isn't there any more.
I'm wondering whether to make a new image with the same name, but just have text in it: " this photo is only available to family members . . ." etc

So do the crawlers check the alt tags - I've got an awful lot of Arrow Up and Arrow Down
Yahoo has my Homepage quote as it's top listing and then the RC list of websites posting.

I think the "returned" visitor is someone who returns to your site within a certain time, otherwise they are "new" again.
On StatCounter, the returning visitor is one who has a StatCounter cookie saved for your site. I have plenty of people who have visited before, but who discard their cookies or reject them (as they are probably viewed as "third party cookies"). These people do not show up as returning visitors.
Previews: if by this you mean local testing, then you've had it, as far as blocking cookies go My security settings in Internet Explorer are such that when I launch my off-line site, it prompts me to accept internet traffic (or not). I do not, so therefore don't inappropriately add to my RootsChat webcounter, nor to StatCounter log entries. No doubt there are different issues for you Firefox fans out there.
I use my (off-line) site a lot in handling genes reunited queries etc rather than my family tree programme - not least because it is easier to identify the page on my site that I might want to send people to (better than opening up our tree on GR with all the issues that could arise from that).
[That's it for now - off to see if we can pick some blackberries!]

You should have a successful day Julian, there is a glut this year!!!!!
Enjoy
I don't tend to do anything offline simply because I forget the facility is there, unlike the dial up days!!!! I think I might give it a go! Does offline even exist in FF?

Just found a good link and thought I'd pass it on. I expect all you techies know about it but I think it's useful. I've had a few strange ISPs on my site stats - one being 'Provider Local Registry'. I've now found a lovely little site which finds out the real ISP as long as you put in the IP address:
http://whois.domaintools.com/
Followed by the IP address

Just pass them on to Bob - think he's 'Q' or 'M' or whatever.
He'll know what to do with them - or know someone who does

Hi
Just put an IP address in to whoisit and come up with a blacklisted ISP/IP. I don't understand. The user is on BT dial up (Narrow band IP Pool) and came in via a Yahoo search. Any explanations, please
