Changing Surname
« on: Thursday 10 August 06 17:59 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I think I have an instance where a male ancestor may have taken his wife's surname on marriage. His name was Samuel Fellows and he married Ann Jones in Llanbeblig 1866. After that point I can't find any record of Samuel + Ann Fellows. However I can find Samuel + Ann Jones and their children. I'm pretty certain that it's the same family because on Samuel's death Ann married Samuel's younger brother Edward and her children took the name Fellows.

Has anyone else come across instances where the husband has take the wife's maiden name? Anyone hazard a guess as to why it may have been done?

Confusing Huh

Hi Stuart,
I'm very new to all of this and tried earlier (unsuccessfully?) to post a reply to you. Ann and Samuel Jones are my ancestors - their oldest child Morris is my great-grandfather. There's always been a family myth that we're not Jones but Fellows, however I'm getting more and more confused. Are you still of the opinion that this particular Samuel was Edward's elder brother? If so, you're almost certainly a relative of mine. I'm from South wales where Morris came to live, using the name of Jones.
Would love to hear more about this.
