Hi JK..
hadn't been notified re your two great posts, 2nd time this has happened. Will have to check more regularly.
The names link in superbly, as does the occupation shoemaker. This is the first break through I've had on Charles & I'm desperately hoping it's the one.
Dates are out as you say.
Charles death cert as follows:
No 3.
When & where died: 1908, 7 February.. Akaroa.
Name & Surname: Charles Hartley
occupation: Shoemaker
Sex & Age: M; 77yrs.
When & where buried: Okain's Bay, NZ 9 Feb. 1908
where born: London, England
How long in New Zealand: 50yrs.
Where married: Okain's Bay
At what age married: 30yrs.
To whom married Martha Bomforth
Issue living: 4 males: 46,42,40,32
                     1 female: 30
Signature of informant: J.C. Hartley, Son of deceased of Okain's Bay.
Date reg" 2 March 1908.
=========
Charles Hartley born 1831, London , married Martha Bomforth b. 1838/41 England , on 18 September, 1861, Okain's  Bay Chapel School. died 12 June 1880 aged 42yrs.
Martha's parents were  Henry Bomforth & Caroline Shaw married 1841, East Retford, Nottingham. Martha born 1841, East Retford. Came out on the "Olympus" in 1842.
Haven't found when Charles came out but sometime before 1861.
==========
Will have to go through this again to take it in. Surely it's his family. He would have been around 27yrs when he came to New Zealand.
Thank you for your lookups for me, much appreciated.
warmest regards,
Tiffaney

Hi Tiffaney,
Much as I would love this to be your family and all those names really do fit in, there is a problem, You think Charles emigrated to NZ before 1861 but the family I found are still in England for the 71 and 81 census!! I wonder if it is a related family?? Back to the records I think  Sad

Hi JK,
going back over your dates guess you are right. Hopeful desperation creeping in on my part because of similar names. Know about his family in NZ but nothing about his family in England which is a nark. Shoemaker, birth date & family names in NZ are all I have to go on & as I said before haven't found the ship he came out onaltho' still searching.
Would greatly appreciate any family you feel may be his.
Thank you,
Tiffaney.

MARRIAGE

Charles HARTLEY m. Charlotte Elizabeth WELLS
19 November 1848 at St Mary's Lambeth
Groom's father: Joseph HARTLEY
Bride's father: John WELLS

Source: This is an unsourced entry from the IGI, so caution is advised.  A copy of the marriage certificate should however confirm the details.

Additionally - and it may be a coincidence - but the 1841 census throws up a Joseph Hartley (age 45, shoemaker, not born in Middlesex) living with some other people in Plumtree Street, St George Bloomsbury.  [HO107/672/1 folio 15 page 25]

Hi Dave,
Now find that Charles Hartley,b. 1831, London (from his obituary) became a sailor & sailed to most parts of the World before trying his hand at whaling mainly around the South Pacific before finally settling in Okain's Bay New Zealand where in 1861 he married  Martha Bomforth. On the NZ Electoral Rolls he is listed as a shoemaker. Perhaps he learnt the trade through his father or a relative in London.  Feel this may be my only way of finding his family...what do you think.
Apparently he spoke Maori  fluently so must have landed on New Zealand shores when whaling.
This will be the reason I have been unable to find the vessel he came to NZ from London on.
I've found out above but where to from here...??
Thanks for your help..greatly appreciated.
Cheers Tiffaney

Hi Tiffaney

Sorry to say that we've been looking at the wrong man. His age is obviously wrong and, apart from anything else, I've just found him and his wife Charlotte in the 1871 census. They were still in London. [RG10/78 folio 11 page 16]

So back to square one ...

Your Charles was born around 1831 in London. I think we can allow some latitude with his year and place of birth. We might say that he was born between 1827 and 1834 and include Middlesex, Surrey and Essex in the list of possible birthplaces.

Most "Charles Hartleys" were born in Lancashire or Yorkshire as it turns out.

The 1841 census throws up one possibility - a Charles Hartley, age 15, living in Peckham with (what appear to be) his parents Thomas and Harriett. Ages were rounded down, so this Charles may have been up to 19 years old and born as early as 1821. I can't see this chap in 1851.

That's all I have to offer at the moment.

Thank you for looking up my Charles Hartley & sharing your knowledge with me which is invaluable. Will give me something more to go on. I also have him in a query under Sailors from London...what age .. which, if I can find someone to have a looksee, will be great.  A big ask I know.  Bit far away over here in NZ.

Hi Dave

re: My Charles Hartley born 1831 London, England (from death cert.). Have now found he went to sea & sailed to several parts of the world before settling in New Zealand, Okains Bay to be exact as a squatter & later purchased land there, married in 1861 Okains Bay, Banks Peninsula to Martha Holstein (nee Bomforth) from East Retford, England who had come to NZ with her family & Uncle's family. From his obituary Charles tried his hand at whaling mainly around the South Pacific, NZ included as he is reported to be a typical sailor with many tales to tell enhanced with his knowledge of languages espec. fluent in Maori. When in New Zealand he is listed on census when married, as being a shoemaker which he perhaps learnt from his father., back in England. Would love to know more about his exploits, siblings & parents. Ever hopeful.
Thank you,
Tiff
