Isle of Wight Obituary - RAYSON

Hi Everyone

Can anyone help solve a problem of mine.

John Arthur Rayson died 9 November 1902 in Shanklin, Isle of Wight (from his death certificate), he was said to be a retired merchant

Does anyone have access to obituary or memorial inscrptions that may off a clue to other members of his family.

From his death certificate he would be born about 1864 but I have not found him in 1901 census.

His wife's name was Clara Julia Agnes ?

Any help much appreciated

Hi Chris,

How much other information do you have on John? Do you have any census entries from the 1871/81/91 to give some idea as to where he lived earlier in his life?

Free BMD has a John Arthur Rayson 1864  Sept  Qtr Vol 7b Page 237 Nottingham

Looking at Johns death entry on free BMD it gives his age as 33 which if correct would make his birth 1869 and the above record not the one we are looking for?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Sadly FreeBMD is in error on the age of John Arthur Rayson, his death certificate gives his age as 38

The only other confirmed information I have is that he was living at 10 Eton Road, Haverstock Hill, London in 1894 and a confirmation of that address from a Trade directory dated 1895, no census or other information at all, he just seems to appear c 1894

He is becoming my latest brick wall <G>

I am hoping that an obituary may name other family members and give me a lead

This is a long shot....
The Times digital archive has a John RAYSON of the 5th rifle brigade 5554 named as being dangerously ill in Kroonstad in May 1902.

This doesn't fit with him being a retired merchant but could explain why he wasn't on the 1901 census.
