Smalley Derbyshire. 1800
« on: Friday 11 August 06 22:28 BST (UK) »

George Edley on the 1801 Census in Smalley with wife Sarah. However Sarah died 10/4/1809 age 34.  I am seeking Sarah's maiden name, it could be Hadfield or Kerry? I deas on where I could get mariage details.  Married about 1799.  According to the childrens names I am looking more towards  Sarah Hadfield.  I would also like to know if Sarah was buried in the Smalley graveyard, I have checked the Smalley site but didn't find her listed. Any ideas appreciated. gales.

Hi Gales,

First, Sarah is listed in the burials for Smalley, 14 April 1809, aged 34; so she would have been interred in the church graveyard.

Just a small point, in case anyone gets excited. The 1801 census does not name spouses, just the head of the household.
Though as the first daughter of George and Sarah was born in 1800, I think you can assume that Sarah was the wife in 1801  Wink

There is a marriage for George Edley & Sarah Kerry at St Alkmunds, Derby on 26 Feb 1799, both recorded as being from Little Eaton (Phillimore's Marriages) so this may or may not be conclusive evidence.

There is an entry for a Sarah Kerry born about 1775 in the Kerry pedigree,
http://www.patrisiacarrington.dsl.pipex.com/kerryped/indiI412.html
However there is no other information about her as yet, so this could be your Sarah.
The Little Eaton connection may just be a red herring, though Smalley and little Eaton are quite nearby to Derby.

In passing, the only IGI baptism entry for a George Edley, that I could find, is George son of Robert & Ann Edley at North Wingfield , 7 April 1771.

I hope all this helps.

Penna,   Many thanks for your time.  George was listed as head of household 1801 with wife 1 child and servant. Sarah was born 1765  Sarah Kerry doesn't tie in with dates etc. I have all the childrens names up to 1809. Sarah died 3 months after my Gt Gt Grandfather was born.  I am trying to find details of Sarah Hadfield she appears to be the Sarah I am seeking. Thanks again.  Gales

Hi Gales,
Arithmetic is not my strong point but I worked out that if Sarah died in 1809 aged 34, that would make her year of birth roughly 1775 but you say 1765.
Do we have a discrepancy here?

If you are sure she was Sarah Hadfield, could you give an idea of the sources - it might make for an easier search.

Hi Penna, Sorry for confusing you , got my sums wrong.   Doubt if it was Sarah Kerry as she would have died 3 months after my Gt Gt G/father was born  Jan 1811, and he had a Sister Elizabeth born July 1813.   Both he and Elizabeth were Christened Cathedral St Peter Sheffield. George Edley and Sarah Hadfield were married at the Cathedral  3 Dec 1809 . The family follows on in Sheffield from then on. Any ideas where I can get details of Williams full birth detail, or Elizabeths, this may give me the name of their Mother.     Appreciate your help.  Thanks gales

Hi Gales,
I am with you now  Wink

First, getting a look at the Sheffield Cathedral registers may not help you, as by and large details of the mother were not given in the baptism record, apart from her forename. Occasionally you would get a helpful vicar who did add her maiden name but it is unusual.

As you say, if William was born Jan 1811, it would not have been the George Edley/Sarah Kerry parentage, as she died 14 April 1809.
Second, if George Edley & Sarah Hadfield were married in Sheffield in 1809, I would follow up on the Sheffield end, as I think you are on the wrong track in Smalley.

Just to be sure, these are the Edley baptisms in Smalley -

George & Sarah -
Ann, 18 May 1800
Mary, 22 Nov 1801
Sarah, 29 July 1804
Henry, 16 Nov 1806
Catherine, 6 Nov 1808

George & Mary -
George, 25 June 1815
Samuel, 1 Dec 1816
Both are given as from Temple Normanton

There is a marriage for George Edley & Mary Rogers (probably born 1790 in Smalley), at all Saints Derby on 19 Nov 1810.
So it looks as if this George married another Smalley girl, after the death of his first wife - none of which helps you.  Wink
Other than to suggest that you should discount the George in Smalley in 1801, I would  keep looking in the Sheffield area, unless you have some reason to suppose that George and Sarah Hadfield originated in Derbyshire.
Sorry I couldn't come up with the answer.

Regards and good hunting
