Hi Roger,

Think you better change the name to Edmund, looking at the 1861 census, the name could have been either Edward or Edmund, it is very hard to read, but looking at the 1881 that you have, it definitely says Edmund, also found him in 1901 listed as Edmund.

Goodness knows where the others are in 1861 Tongue

Interesting. He has a brother, Charles Henry Dobson born 1850, who eventually sires two children, one of whom is Charles EDMUND Dobson.  Grin

Could you possibly pm me the refs for the 1861 and 1901 censuses, please? As for the 1881 census, I only have the Mormons-on-line screen, which DEFINITELY has him down as EDWARD.

Hi,
I've been following the look ups,  but I'm too slow at typing Grin

Regarding the ticks in the final column on the census, the enumerator was supposed to put what the defect was, but looking at Edmund Dobson Chapman on the 1851 though there is a tick in the final column, one other person on the page also has a tick and both of these are people born outside of Yorkshire, just a thought

Hi again Bee - my stalker!!  Grin

Actually, yes - I had more or less come to the same conclusion over the tick=out of country rather than a disability.

I've had quite a good time discovering more about the Dobsons since I got the marriage cert!  Cheesy

The ref for the 1861 entry is already with the details I posted.  Here are the 1901 details for Edmund:

27 Tavern?, Lambeth - RG13/419, Folio 33, Page 3
Edmund Dobson, Head, M, 54, Telegraphist Clerk, Edinburgh
Hannah Burks?, Mother in Law, Widow, 78, Yorkshire, Bratton
Margaret Dobson, Wife of Head, M, 49, Yorkshire, Middles?Huh

Sorry about all the question marks, but the writing is terrible.  I notice Edmund has shaved a few years off his age again!!!!

Thanks again Kath - you've done a sterling job!  Smiley

Edit.
Found a marriage which MIGHT fit. How does this look?

1890 June 1/4 Dobson Edmund / Birks  Margurite Hannah   Camberwell  1d 1400
Could that be the mother-in-law's surname on the 1901 census? I note that by 1901 they ARE living in Lambeth, London.  Wink

I've also found a birth ...

1847 March 1/4  Birks  Margaret Hannah     Stockton  24 24_
Which would put the age out slightly - she'd be 54 not 49, but since he's shaved some years off I wouldn't be surprised!

Well? What do you think?  Huh

By the way - any idea why my 1881 Dobson details were removed? How were they different from anything anyone else posts on here?

Hi Roger,

You're spot on with the marriage you have found, they are in Lambeth in 1891 as well, but this time the enumerator has got the name right, here are the details:

19 Evandale Rd, Lambeth - RG12/405, Folio 108, Page 25
Edmund Dobson, Head, M, 38, Telegraphist, Scotland
Margurite H  "    , Wife, M, 34, Durham, Stoke on Trent
plus lodgers

Margurite, enumerated as Margaret and her mother Hannah were actually living in Scarborough in 1871 (RG10/4816, Folio 68, Page 50) and in 1881 (RG11/4802, Folio 169, Page 67).  Margurite/Margarets place of birth seems to change each time!!!!!

If you follow the link, on the part where the 1881 Dobson details were deleted, it will let you know what to do.  You need to have the statement Census information is Crown copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk included on your posts.

Hi,
Could I please get a copy of your Edmund's certificate?
I also have an Edmund of the same age from Hull and I would like to positively elliminate your one.
This will let me put my Edmund 'to rest' as I think he died in 1862 aged 30, see WES/13/410.

Reason: I am trying to trace descendants of Noah Dobson born c 1804 (his wife's year of birth). Noah wrote a series of very interesting items from 1835 onwards and I would like to share these with Noah's other descendents.

Regards Richard.
