Thank youvery much Isabel.I really appreciate it. It looks like Robert had a first wife who then died.I'll have to check it out. Is it possible for you to check out who had the pub in 1861 Langdale .Only if it's not too much hassle.I'm trying to find Grandma Hannah Thompson, unmarried, aged c71,assuming she's still alive. I've seen various Hannahs in Trade Directories, both grocers and innkeepers. I can't find her in 1841 and 1851 she's visiting her son.No real clues to where she was born, possbly Preston Patrick area or Grayrigg. Cheers Sue

Thanks Isabel Can I assume Hannah is not in the 1841 Westmoreland Census? I'll have to see if she's findable in Lancashire. By the way,my Thompsons ended up in Rochdale. Sue

This might just be a coincidence for me, as I don't know where Grayrigg is. But I have a Henry Thompson, shoemaker, listed as the father on my Mary Ann Thompson's marriage cert. Her residence at the time was Penrith. The marriage was 1846, Penrith, and she was born 1824. Could there be a connection? Best wishes, Jackie

Hi Jackie Robert Thompson was born or rather christened in 1808 at Endmoor which is south of Kendal. As far as I know he was the only( ilegitimate) son of Hannah Thompson, born c 1790.I don't know anything about Hannah's family or where he was apprenticed as a shoemaker. He married Jane Wharton who was from a family of yeoman farmers from Tebay .Tebay and Grayrigg are fairly close to Penrith. My father said his greatgrandma used to go down to Penrith market in a horse and cart. However Robert and Jane didn't have a son Henry. Let me if you find a connection further back.I always seem to hit brick walls around 1800, Cheers Sue

hi If you send me a personal message with your email address I'll send you the Wharton info I have. And if you go to Orton and spot a grave for Hannah Thompson, daughter of James and Hannah Wharton, died sometime between 1846 and 1851 please let me know. Some friends have checked Grayrigg churchyard for me and there are too many deaths of that name registered in Kendal for me to send for. Cheers Sue

The genuki Orton site has the Bellasis monumental inscriptions. There is another site (Westmorland Papers/North of the Sands) that has monumental inscriptions for lots of other Westmorland parishes but does not have Morland, Orton and Shap. You have to go to genuki for those.
There are several Wharton entries - possibly for your James - but I didn't spot Hannah. regards Deborah Boss
