Hi, i wonder if anyone can help. I've been going through the parish records for Straiton this morning and one of the entries reads as follows: 1764 27th September, William Muir Taylor in Clauchan of Straittown and Agnes Kennedy his wife had a child baptized begotten in lawful marriage named William
Any ideas what Clauchan of Straittown means???
Thanks Marie

Could Clauchan be a place within the parish of Straiton and Straittown another spelling of Straiton?

Thanks, could be but i don't think so. Straiton is mentioned on several other baptisms.

Hi
Just a wild guess here but a google search turns up another OPR birth recorded like yours:
1766 16th June, Thomas TENNANT in Clauchan of Straittown and Margaret McCUTCHON his wife had a child baptized begotten in lawful marriage named Barbara.
Which being in a different year and all leads one to think that this was a term used around this time periodl. A definition of "clachan" from my gazetteer source says it's gaelic for "stones, a hamlet." Soooo...based on that maybe Straittown was a much smaller hamlet probably not far from Straiton. Maybe an old map ca. the late 1700's might show this place on it???
Best wishes Jean
