Blegg « on: Sunday 15 February 04 08:09 GMT (UK) »
In 1841 John Blegg recorded as Blag sailed as a convict on the Somersetshire arriving in VDL (Tasmania) 1842, in Australia if your name is Blegg you are a close relative. I havent yet been able to find out anything about him before arriving in Tassie except he was born about 1816. Has any one come accross his name, as he was 25 at transportation he may have been married and perhaps had children. John second name possibly george but no record of it and the surname could be Bleg, Blegg, Blag, Blagg born about 1816. any suggestions gratefully recieved bleggy

Dear Bleggy,
I have had a look at the Surnames Bleg, Blegg, Blag, Blagg and I am sure they are all derived from the name Blagg
If you look at the numbers on the 1881 census you have Blag = 3 Bleg = 1 Blegg = 1 Blagg = 545 The Majority of the Blagg's were in Nottinghamshire 156 and there were 80 living in Lancashire.
This would indicate that the name would originate from this area of the Country.
I did a quick search for a marriage but was unable to find information relating to your John Blegg.
If you have a look at www.familysearch.org there are a few Blaggs for you to have a look at.
