Mary SPEIR b 1806

Looking for the death or any other info on this girl....
Mary Speir (Spier)
Born March 1806 @ Biglees, West Kilbride.
Another sibling called Mary born 1816 so assume 1st Mary died bef 1816.
Between 1819 and 1811 the family moved to Yonderhouses, Ardrossan so she could have died at either place.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Sarah,
I expect that you have sorted this out by now but I have only just joined Roots Chat. It was Margaret not Mary born in 1806.

My husband is descended from Margaret's younger brother James. I believe that you have information on their parents John Speir and Janet Dickie. I should be grateful for any help. If I have any information that you need then I'll be very pleased to share. Copies of original docs. etc.

Thanks Joe. I've had difficulty finding James born 1825 in the 1851 and 1861 census. In 1841 he's living with his father and mother in the house next to Yonderhouse Farm. His father dies between 1841 - 1849 and his mother Janet dies on 4th November 1849. I presume that this is the trigger for the family leaving Yonderhouses. He turns up again in the 1871 census living with his nephew Robert, presumably his brother John's son.

I'm now trying to find out more about father and mother John Speir and Janet Dickie. Probably through the parish records.

Hi to you both..... Now I really am confused I have John Spie(ei)r born in `759 Married Janet Dickie in 1802. Have I missed out a generation somewhere on the Speir line?
I had sorted out the Margaret Mary thing, thanks but am now also a little confused by your list Joe. You have 1851 John age 48 and "Jane" wife age 42 then you say John married " Jean ".....Guess I am being a bit thick today!

Have you seen the Yahoo groups Speir heritage web site?

Assuming I have the correct person I have 3 generations back from John & Janet of Biglees/Yonderhouses

i reckon that the john on the 1851 census is the son of john and janet dickie, who was born 1802

You have John Speir dob abt [/b]1777[b] married Janet Dickie dob 1781. I have John Spier dob [/b]02/03/1759[b] married Janet Dickie. Have I missed a generation with the Johns.
Which John married Jean Rodger?

Thanks for getting in touch.

The dob (abt) 1777 for John Speir comes from a family tree input into the FamilySearch web site. It is incorrect. Don't know by whom as the person is not supporting the site any more. In the 1841 census John Speirs is 80 years old and Janet Speirs is 55 years old living at Yonderhouse next door to Yonderhouse Farm where their son Hugh is living. This makes John's dob about 1761.

The John Speir married to Jane Rodger is the son of John Speir and Janet Dickie.

So you have not missed out a generation.

I have registered with the Speirheritage web site. Now I'm awaiting acceptance. Please can you authorise.

I'm looking forward to finding more generations.

John Speirs dob 02/03/1759 in Kilruskin (married to Janet Dickie 18/01/1802)
Parents... Allan Speirs dob 1716. Married 23/02/1748/49. Died 06/08/1789 Farmer @ Kilruskin.
Janet Thomson dob 21/12/1726 Finnifoot Bapt 24/12/1725 (That can't be right, must check date) Died 09/01/1807.

Allan's parents John Spiers bapt 24/06/1694 in Kilwinning. Wife unknown.
His parents John Spiers and Janet Anderson

Janet Thomson's parents...... Hugh Thompson bapt 22/07/1694, Annot, West Kilbride Married June 1725. (...His parents James Thomson & Janet Reid his siblings John bapt 18/09/1692 & Janet 19/11/1695... exactly 257 years before me!!!)

Janet Dickie dob 15/07/1781 @ Lyssands, Dalry parents John Dickie dob Feb 1753 @ Corsehill, Kilwinning. Married 31/07/1780 farmer @ Lyssands. Married Ann Campbell dob 18/12/1761. Bapt 23/12/1761.

John Dickie's parents ... John Dickie born abt 1724 married Agnes Young (born abt 1782) Aug 1759 (needs checking)

It's amazing the discrepancies you find when giving info to other folk

Ann Campbell's parents ... John Campbell born abt 1734 ( his parents John Campbell and Elizabeth Boyd born abt 1720)
Margaret Smith born 05/08/1733 (her parents Archibald Smith married Margaret Cochran on 04/12/1720 kilwinning

Still cannot get into Speirheritage, it says membership "pending".

I have the unnamed daughter born 1818 but I do not have Mary twin sister to Margaret born 1806. I have re-run my searches and still cannot find twin Mary. How do you know?

I expect that you have all of the regular census info. on Margaret but do you have?: -

it could be her mentioned in the 1837 Pigot's Gazetteer as Margaret Maitland a flesher in Quay St, Saltcoats. Look under Saltcoats on the web site below.

Her headstone in Dalry cemetery. Look for Margaret Speir under Dalry on the web site below. It has been erected by her son John. There are no pictures on the site but if you contact Mr Monaghan he will e-mail photo's out very quickly. Also in the same cemetery is John Speir & Jean Rodger.

I knew about the pigots entry. She took over her husbands flesher (butcher) shop for a time after he died then I think became a draper or something similar. I did not know about the headstone but have got wills etc. At some point will try to get a decent print out of it and send it to you if you want to pm me your snail mail address.

I've just picked up on this thread - just discovered last week I have a dose of Speirs on my husband's tree. What is the Speir website you mentioned earlier? I googled for it, but I couldn't see anything.

My Speirs are all from the tarbolton area of Ayrshire.
